  1. Tang Palace is a food and beverage restaurant chain group based in China. After the first restaurant launched in 1997, they now own 9 brands covering seafood restaurant, Chinese cuisine, Japanese cuisine and our most familiar Hong Kong dim sum, who keeps on expanding the markets across Beijing, Shanghai, Macau to Dongguan etc.Until recently, the group enters Hong Kong with two of their new Cantonese branches. The first is everyone's favourite the Social Place, another is a new restaurant situated at Hopewell Centre of Wan Chai, Tang's Cuisine.With reference to the excellences at Social Place, Tang's Cuisine is certainly up to standard, set with elegant dining area and provides pleasurable catering service.During the new promotion, the renowned Tang's roasted pigeon is marked with half price.The pigeon is deliciously marinated and roasted to golden brown colour, with excellent tenderness, meaty, smoky, which are advised to eat by hands as given some plastic gloves for your best convenience.Some favourite signatures are baked buns with sweet crispy crust, with flavorful goose liver filling and roast goose pastry that is assembled like a beautiful swan.The steamed rice rolls are also stuffed with a generous piece of house-made thick-cut barbecued pork, whilst the seasonal hairy crab dumpling is definitely recommended. Thin wrapper, visible amount of crab roe, soupy, it is truly amazing.For the best ending, the deep fried sesame ball has our most loved runny egg custard that is finished off with dollop of bird's nest, becoming a lady's favourite item.Surely Tang's has been knowing our Hong Kong dim sum very well!   2. Emack & Bolios - Triple Stacks Special

    Founded in Boston, Emack and Bolio's is an ice cream chain based in Massachusetts, US, with the first international branch in Bangkok and have recently opened a new branch in Hong Kong during mid October. They are signatured in their homemade waffle cones, some dipped in marshmallow frosted froot loops, chocolate with oreo crumbs, coconut flakes and sprinkles.And of course, an extensive varieties of over 80 ice cream flavors can be served from single to triple scoop size, such as double chocolate brownies, house vanilla, mint chocolate chips and a list that can never be memorized fully.As a recommendation, it is better to share among friends to get a nice triple stack cone.From top to bottom, ours consist of deep purple cow, stoney's dream and caramel moose prints. They are basically black currant based with chocolate and white chocolate, triple chocolates cookies & cream and caramel peanut butter flavors respectively.Despite neither of those have strong identifiable flavors, the added chocolate chips or caramel sauce are quite generous and the texture is acceptably creamy and smooth.The base is weak in milk flavor and could be better if they made them sweeter. Nonetheless, the designed cone is appreciated much with nice coconut flakes.Call me an ice cream connoisseur, it is frankly not the best ice cream I've ever tasted.   3. FRITES Belgium on Tap - Belgium Beer House

    Entering FRITES's new location at Causeway Bay, the restaurant is set like a modern bistro, with 2 projector screen, a busy open kitchen and a stylish Belgian beer bar where covers large selections of beverages with over 70 varieties, the four genuine Belgian beers on tap. A favourite would be strawberry Hoegaarden in rose pink colour. At the opening party, while we are having unlimited wines and beers, some of the house signatures and bite-size food are served as canapes. They include lollipop-like salad nicoise with tuna tataki, creamy salmon tartare with prawn cracker, given piping hot battered fish & chips, mini burgers and fried camembert balls. Everything tastes equally delicious and fresh from the kitchen, which also introduce us to the restaurant food menu. During restaurant hours, they offer a comprehensive list of traditional Belgian dishes that come in hearty and large sharing portion. An adorables starter is a classic steak tartare. The fresh minced trimmings are very creamy and perfectly seasoned with layers of onions, chives, shallots, additionally a runny egg yolk. It goes well beyond with few slices of toasted sourdough. The signature pot of mussels has a laksa stock base made with coconut cream and lemongrass, forming the most luscious dip for the toasted bread and fries that come alongside. Not to mention the tender and meaty mussels in their triangular shells, all the elements have completed this dish irresistibly. Last but not the least, we have a roasted pork knuckle that come with absolutely crispy skin and a scrumptious sweet caramelized sauce. Despite the extremely large portion of 750g, it is neither too oily nor heavy because of the generous roasted veggies underneath that have pretty much soaked up all the flavors. The meal ends with a terrific chocolate fondant. Served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and biscuit crumbs, the fudgy cake with hot molten center has been perfectly complemented to give the most decadent chocolate pleasure. All in all, FRITES is the perfect belgian beer house for an authentic Belgian fare in Hong Kong.   4. Named just a word different from Vida Rica Bar, the Vida Rica is an elegant restaurant featuring a spectacular affair of the South China Sea and Nam Van Lake. Providing all day services, it has intimate seating with the perfect interpretation on modern cuisines from the Executive Chef. While there is contemporary breakfast, the menu highlights classic cuisines impacted by delicacy and clever twist using the freshest ingredients. Recently, the Mandarin Oriental Macau has hosted a guest Chef Stephane Buron, who heads two Michelin-starred restaurants, won several culinary awards and was named "Chef of the Year" in 2013. His stay at MO Macau has brought us a taste of his six course degustation dinner menu as well as four-course and five-course lunches at the restaurant that features his signature fine dining dishes with wine pairing. They include a roasted pigeon breast and poached sea bass. Started off with a refined presentation of amuse bouche, it contains element of molecular gastronomy with mashed green pea pearl and herb sherbet. A warm basket of assorted bread are also given along with different choices of homemade butter and spread, from plain to chili, they are all neatly displayed. The arctic char fish carpaccio has become one of our favourites, plated in circular pattern, with beautiful edible flower petals and a refreshing complement of yuzu-like sudashi sorbet. The two mains impress very much indeed. While the white sea bass is poached perfectly flaky and moist, dressed with delicious truffle veal jus over a bed of semi-mashed potatoes, that piece of crunchy fish skin is especially worth noting because it has given a wonderful contrast to our palates. Another favourite is definitely the roasted pigeon. As one of the Chef's signatures, it presents an excellent tenderness, juicy and is seared to pinkish interior. This dish is out of this world. Our five-course meal is completed with a sweet resemblance of the mont blanc. The creation combines traditional mont blanc with French macarons - chestnut puree and whipped cream over crispy macaron, this picture perfect dessert is very astonishing. Some rounding off would be petit fours of madeleines and mini lemon tart, in addition to a cup of well-executed cappuccino. This is probably the best world-class feast from a Two-starred Michelin Chef. Spending most of the time creating their perfect hamburgers, the restaurant serves also a bit of craft beer, classic side dishes and some daily special depending on seasonal ingredients. In spite of its less convenient location from the Island, it has presented an amazing fine dining restaurant where worths to go ahead. The Cantonese Restaurant at the club is executed by a Michelin 3 Star Chef, who has achieved various culinary awards and worked at a Michelin 3 Star hotel restaurant - The Eight.   8. Ganko がんこ - Quick Japanese Meal

    This Japanese chain is cheap and reasonably good. It serves contemporary Japanese food ranging from single to multiple sets with appetizer, soup, entrees of sushi, sashimi and tempura combinations. Conveniently situated at Dotonbori food street, we come in for a quick fix before heading to the airport. A sushi set comes with 10 sushi and 2 mini rolls; a plate of tempura and miso soup. The sushi are not anything special but pleasantly looking and tasty. The tempura is much appreciated as it is served with dipping sauce that has been added with generous grated turnip.     The renowned Udon-suki was started at Mimiu Honten. This restaurant has their main branch located at the center of Osaka, and from there to Tokyo, it has more than 10 outlets around Japan. Opening at a convenient location, we unintentionally walked in to Mimiu at Hanshin Department Store, where is just right opposite to our hotel. The Japanese style seating give us good impression as well as the friendly waitress who has explained everything with an English menu. Serves only what they think is the best, the menu includes multiple dinner courses, signature udon-suki and soba noodle. Each comes individually with an appetizer, sashimi, udon or soba, dessert or fruit. The appetizer turns out to be mayonnaise dressed salad topped with a few pine nut. While the sashimi fish are promisingly fresh, a platter of tempura is also deep fried using fish, prawns and assorted veggies. We also loved the simmered herring that is flaky fish fillet cooked in sweet soy sauce. Highlight of the meal is surely the Udon-suki, which is basically udon hot pot. Stock is poured into the big pot, followed by udon, chicken meats, cabbage and prawn. By the end of it, taro and rice cake are added. To note that they have very pretty utensils such as the little rabbit toothpick container and sea shell spoon, it is a very surprising Japanese dinner afterall.     Once again, I am back here for a no MSG Chinese dinner at Social Place. There is always a reason for returning the same restaurant, whilst this time is for their famous truffle buns. Basically a steamed bun stuffed with mushroom fillings, fluffy with an aromatic centre. The shrimp dish is my second favourite of the night. The size is as large as regular prawn, glazed generously with a citrus yet slightly sweeten and thick lemony sauce. The roll of beef is so tender, succulent, and coated with an extremely crispy layer. It is perfect to serve with the come along curry sauce. The boneless chicken wing is also a popular order here. The black balsamic has indeed added a distinct flavor and served with two skewers of grilled pineapple for a decent plating. A new dessert, chilled green bean cake, is in fact filled with red bean paste, which is equivalent to the one I had at The Dining Room.     The Paris originated tearoom, Angelina, has been on my wish list since her launch in IFC Mall. The exquisite and vintage design has made here one of the best cafes with some sense of romanticism. Not to mention their gourmet confectioneries, make sure you come in daytime, unlike me, for more options. The iconic pastry, Mont-Blanc, with a twist of praline has been uniquely made in the Angelina paper cup. It consists of crunchy egg white based meringue, stiff cream, sweet praline center and most significantly, the swirl of chestnut puree. Personally I think it's has the correct sweetness provided that many comments criticized on it. The choux pastry, named after two countries, has great butteriness, chewy and filled with a ferrero rocher like praline cream. The pecan has added extra crunch to this impressive dessert. The famous hot chocolate that is made with three kinds of qualified cocoa should not be missed. With its distinct thickness and chocolate sourness, the hot chocolate is exceptionally fulfilling and you might imagine drinking a cup of chocolate ganache. I highly suggest to share between the two.   12. This Michelin star dim sum specialist has been ranked on the top list since then. Given that they only serve a limited number of Cantonese dim sums at the restaurant, there must be something that brought up the popularity. First, it is their signature - baked barbecue pork bun. The bun, with a sweet crust, is so fluffy and stuffed with sweetened char siu pork. The filling is not gluey and paste-like but with real bites of bbq pork. Follow by the tender spare ribs seasoned with traditional black bean sauce. The chicken feet also have soft and chewy texture, braised in soy-based abalone sauce. The grilled capsicum is stuffed with fish paste, which is perfect to serve with sweet soy sauce too. Y M Kitchen offers local home cookings, as well as various seafood depending on the season. A recommended dish is the crispy beef brisket. The coating of crisp is surrounding the tender beef, which is served along a sweet and chili dipping sauce. The signature Mont Blanc is made with a generous swirl of chestnut puree, hiding within is a layer of light cream and egg white meringue on top of a simple not-so-buttery crust that is filled with milk chocolate ganache and passion fruit curd. The noticeable sweetness is indeed well balanced by the citrus passion fruit. Although the mille feuille is made with very crispy and caramelized puff pastries, the caramel pastry cream is too sweet to my liking whereas the vanilla layer is not creamy at all.     I'm not a fan of burger. But when I get a burger, it must be a good one, just like the Big Fernand. It is a French burger workshop that sells burgers in their homemade French style, from beef, lamb, chicken to vegetarian. A second major ingredient, cheese, is not those typical cheddar, but a variety of French cheese. The little combo comes with one of their hamburgers, freshly made French fries and a drink. The fluffy sesame buns are made with my choice of medium rare beef, pinkish flesh, juicy, tender, a piece of absolute crispy bacon and sweet caramelized onions.   16. Have you ever been confused between Lin Heung Tea House and Lin Heung Kui? I do. Even so, they actually have the same serving style, same authentic Cantonese cuisine and are so crowded during the afternoon. Dim sum trolleys and huge bamboo baskets are rolling across the floor, waiters are certainly unfriendly and less likely to serve you well. Coming to the food, even though the shrimp dumplings are seemingly small in size, it turns out that the shrimp fillings are generous enough. The so-call “dry steamed” beef look like a traditional basket of shao mai, which is served along Worcestershire sauce. I especially love the beancurd roll filled with fatty sparerib and soft fish maw. It is basically another version of chicken beancurd rolls. Regardless of the appearance, the duck leg wraps are indeed flavorful, dressed with sweet soy and stuffed with some kind of salty ham. An order of steamed buns is a must for every dim sum visit. We got the sesame paste buns with comparatively dense and less generous filling, whilst the bun itself is fluffy and slightly sweet. So as the Ma Lai Go that is standing impressively tall on a small plate, extremely soft, puffy and the brown sugar has given it the perfect sweetness.   17. TGIF. We should start off the weekend with something impressive! How about a giant souffle? At Tai Ping Koon, where it is renowned for, is an oldish European restaurant that serves Hong Kong style western meal. So often their sets come with daily soup or salad, a bread roll with Anchor butter. The main is this pomfret fish, cooked in deep coloured sauce and smoked with aromatic tea leaves. The garoupa fillet is just an ordinary cutlet coated with generous bread crumbs, served along a miracle whip dressed potato fruit salad. One of their signatures is the little pigeon. While they claimed to be prepared in their own style with swiss sauce, the slightly sweet but salty sauce, which I expect to be thicker, has unfortunately turned out too thin. It is not viscous enough to coat the pigeon entirely. The set meal comes with a complimentary daily dessert - Chinese egg pudding topped with red beans. In fact, a TPK meal should always end with the GIANT baked souffle. The enormous pile of egg white is baked into a fluffy interior, a burnt and cakery crust, retaining an extremely eggy aftertaste. And trust me, it will be too much for two pax to share.     From Taiwan, Singapore and Indonesia, the perfect Taiyaki has finally launched in Hong Kong. They serve Taiyaki with choices of red bean, custard and green tea fillings, and topped with frozen yogurt or ice creams in form of parfaits. My choice is original tangy frozen yogurt, with a sweet and fresh strawberry drizzled with caramel sauce, topping on the fish-shaped cake, which has crispy exterior and a fluffy pancake-like interior. While it is freshly made with custard filling, it is simply delectable. So as the original froyo with honeycomb, but stuffed with red bean instead. Despite the fact that it is located at the food court area, this cafe or take-away shop definitely worths a visit.     Along the promenade by the waterfront, there is this European restaurant. It has an open plan, a hip cocktail bar with welcoming services. The restaurant is kid-friendly, which include kid's corner in their menu, and serve up family-focused brunch at the weekend. For something light, we order one of their signatures, the crab cake. It is obviously made with lumpy crab meat, breaded generously with crumbs and fried to golden brown. The mayonnaise and pineapple salsa have contributed as a sweet and light refreshment. For eggs, or in other words, the egg royale has fatty smoked salmon topped with perfectly poached eggs, the yolk is extremely runny and the hollandaise sauce has been made to the right tanginess.     Mandarin Oriental Macau has recently launched a new afternoon tea set at their upper level bar, named FANtasy. At the Vida Rica Bar, we are accommodated with an exquisite view of the Macau landscape and also a quiet environment. Two skewers of citrusy sorbet are first served over cold flame as welcome refreshers. Followed by the three wooden tiers savories and sweets. The panini has its formal grill marks but just a bit too dry on the edges and soggy in the middle due to a spread of mustard. Similarly, the chicken sausage roll in puff pastry is just average. While I especially love the soft squid ink bread with pinkish and tender wagyu beef, the smoked salmon over a beetroot toast also gives a scent of sweet note. On the top tier, besides the chocolate lolly with raspberry mousse, I would prefer the lemon slice with citrus lemon curd more than the chocolate one. Not to mention it is a really dense and fudgy double chocolate cake, the financier also has an obvious taste of almond garnished with pistachio cream. The champagne jelly is so strong that the rose has been completely overwhelmed by the wine. Some raisin and bacon scones are also prepared with the orange passion fruit jam, raspberry rose jam and honey. In addition, we order their signature mille feuille. It is undoubtedly gorgeous, with crunchy caramelized puff pastries layered between excellent pastry cream that contains real Tahitian vanilla pods. It is a perfection. The afternoon tea set ends with a 70% hot chocolate. The hot chocolate with specifically high cocoa content are of course bittersweet, smooth but milky at the same time. Similar to North at Sands, it is located within the casino but there is a family entrance that allows underaged individuals to dine in. Tonight we have a simple and warm to soul fish slices congee, which comes with spring onions and some crispy chips. The braised pork ribs are surprisingly tender and with a perfect ratio of meat to fat, regardless of the somewhat thicken sauce and totally unrelated vegetables, it's indeed a dish that has been excelled to almost perfection.     As one of the Michelin 3 Stars rated restaurants, this upscale restaurant, with a privacy atmosphere, serves delightful Cantonese, Huaiyang cuisines and also classy dim sums in the afternoon. Every meal starts with an amuse bouche, which are diced beef fried with black pepper, pine nuts and a mini abalone served with pomelo jelly. Some signature dim sums including the goldfish dumplings with fresh and succulent shrimp fillings, are served in a silver metal steamer. The golden tartlets have buttery crust and generous crabmeat cooked in Portuguese sauce. The purse puffs are also presented wonderfully in a long platter over cucumber slices, filled with flavorful river shrimp and minced pork.     The egg tart battle is here! Who makes the best egg tart? I personally favor short crust more than puff pastry crust. And the criteria for a good egg tart should have a thick and rich custard, a yellow eggy interior with hint of sweetness. A favourite of mine would be from Maria's Bakery. The silky and sweet egg custard is not overwhelmed by the slightly salty short crust pastry. Another new favorite is the Hokkaido milk egg white tart from Arome Bakery. The egg white tart has been reheated in the oven for 10 minutes, resembling a sloppy milk pudding inside a buttery cookie crust.     Crowded. Very crowded on a Sunday afternoon at Jasmine Place, another restaurant presented by the Maxim's. The puff pastries stuffed with honey char siu pork is freshly baked with a piping hot filling and served on a beautiful platter. From the traditional bamboo steamer, this bun has my favourite sesame paste filling leaking like molten lava, it is undeniably scrumptious! And finally, the gooey jelly roll gives an aromatic sesame aftertaste, very light and refreshing.
