  1. The Joomak – A Soothing Winter K-Hotpot

    Last week, I visited The Joomak at Harbour City again to sample some of their new winter creations. Introduced with a series of warm Korean-style hotpot, there are two hotpot soup bases to choose including a Ginseng Chicken soup and a Vegan Prickly Pear Carbonara soup. Vegan Prickly Pear Carbonara Soup Base 素 仙人掌卡邦尼湯底 Vegan Prickly Pear Carbonara Soup Base 素 仙人掌卡邦尼湯底 The prickly pear carbonara soup base is basically soy milk colored with prickly pear, not only is it nutrition-packed, it is also made with vegan cheese that makes it perfect for vegetarian. The soup base is very creamy and hearty, not too heavy and of course, very rich in soybean flavor. My favourites are the crunchy crystalline iceplant as well as the soya knot that boils amazingly silky in the soup.   2. WAALAH! Literally, this is the name of an obscure cafe in Causeway Bay. With an open door setting and a spacious, euro street style environment, we come in last minute during the Happy Hour time, with a glass of white wine. Having said that, I actually ordered a lychee lemongrass refresher, which tastes amazing! WAALAH! Cafe Cafe Culture Remixed On the all day menu, there are starters and big dishes to share. We opt for a Lollipork, which is basically pork belly skewer, grilled perfectly juicy with a crunchy honey hoisin coating. Popcorn chicken is also very crunchy and batter fried that comes with a sweet chili sauce. Mixed Grill, which includes rib eye steak with herby butter on the side, Australian pork shoulder, chicken breast, grilled sausages and crispy bacon. My favourite is the steak fajita, served on a hot skillet with sweet pepper, onion paprika, that also comes with typical guacamole, tomato salsa, sour cream and warm flour tortilla. WAA!   3. Opened lately in Wan Chai QRE Plaza, Zither Garden is a Pekineses/Chinese restaurant specialises in making one of the most authentic roasted Peking ducks in town. It is set in a modern and chic environment, with marble walls and an open kitchen showcasing the roast oven and the making of Chinese pastries. Such as chinese barley water, sweetcorn juices, homemade sour plum juices and many other fresh fruit juices and special Chinese brewed tea. Rose Lychee Tea 玫瑰堂煌 For our starters, we have Wuxi fried eel, pork trotters cured meat and drunken chicken. The fried eel is incredibly crunchy with a sweet and tangy sticky sauce, whilst the drunken chicken is very tender with a strong Huadiao wine flavor. Crispy Fried Eel 無錫脆鱔 Salted Cured Meat 揚州水晶肉 Drunken Chicken 花雕醉雞 Drunken Chicken 花雕醉雞 The signature roasted peking duck is exceptionally juicy and crispy, because it is first air-dried, frozen, and then undergoes a second air-dry process before being roasted in the oven. The Chef will carve around 10 pieces of duck skin, and the rest are around 108 pieces of duck meat with skin.     Located at the New World Millennium Hong Kong Hotel, Cafe East is the buffet restaurant that has been recently reopened with a market-style concept. It features Asian and Western fare focusing on fresh ingredients and quality, also interactive open kitchens and counters serving plenty of homemade delicacies. Cafe East Starting from the antipasto and salad counters, caesar salad is tossed and turned in the large wooden salad bowl. Sashimi counter is serving super thick cut salmon, scallop etc., while there are seafood on ice and a cheese platter with condiments.   8. Yixin is a family-run restaurant where it was originally located in North Point. Moving here and there until settled in Wan Chai, the restaurant continues serving a few Shun Tak and classic Cantonese dishes. We have pre-ordered a few signature dishes while finalizing our menu. Yixin Restaurant 益新美食館 Dinner Menu 自訂晚餐 One signature dish is the Pipa duck, roasted perfectly juicy and tender with the skin that crisp up on point. The barbecue pork is amazingly juicy as well, not too fatty but I like a more sweeter honey glaze. Signature Pipa Duck 馳名琵琶鴨 Yixin BBQ Roasted Pork 益新叉燒皇 Goldenly deep-fried prawn toast follows, thick and crunchy, the prawn is exceptionally large in size! I also loved the stir-fried egg white with crabmeat and milk, which is soft, fluffy, and has a rich milk aftertaste. Deep-Fried Prawn Toast 窩貼大明蝦 Sauteed Crab Meat & Egg White with Milk 蟹肉大良炒鮮奶 Another signature is the smoked pomfret. The fish is prepared like smoked salmon, but is hot-smoked with wood chips and house special sauce. The colour is naturally made from carrot juice and the smoky flavor is so rich indeed.     Opened lately in Leighton Road Causeway Bay, it is a new branch of the BRICK LANE family where has taken up the old location of Agnes b. Le Pain Grille. It is a modern and chic space with a taste of London, hanged on the wall is the signature white-coloured bike. BRICK LANE Causeway Bay BRICK LANE The menu includes quintessential British treat, for example, fish and chips, all-day breakfast like egg benedicts and egg royale. The list goes on to pasta, pizza, seafood and meat dishes, also a list of irresistible house-special cocktails. The pasta sauce is phenomenal made by blending together prawn shells and the rest of its oil, giving a rich and intense prawn flavor. The linguine pasta is made excellently al dente, cooked nicely with cherry tomatoes and sliced button mushrooms, whilst the red prawn itself is super large in size and very meaty. Roasted over a beer can, the steam from the beer cooks the inside of the whole chicken, which makes it juicy and succulent. Located on level 5, it is a rustic, modern and chic industrial setting with a bar and lounge, chef’s tables, open kitchen and dining area. This summer, they have launched a new weekend brunch offering not only brunch staples, but also fresh seafood, as well as unlimited free-flow champagne and premium sakes! Flint Grill & Bar Flint Grill & Bar The seafood bar contains plenty of sashimi and sushi choices, including tuna, amaebi and tamago sushi; soba noodle and a very nice lobster miso. There are poached lobster, king crab legs, brown crab that has been loaded with crab roe, and the most essential fresh oysters sourced from France. Chestnut mont blanc and hazelnut apricot mousse are made delicate whilst a sesame black forest parfait with a pronounced sesame mousse and berry compotes is particularly impressive. Located at the lobby of The Langham hotel, it is an elegant space featuring a luxurious and dramatic ambience, also a dessert refrigerator showcasing many homemade treats and pastries. I asked for a Ginger Garden, which is a fresh fruit iced tea served with fresh mint and lychee. British Afternoon Tea The set includes both sweets and savoury finger sandwiches, starting with a strawberry trifle made with sponge light vanilla cream and strawberry jelly. The caramel and praline opera cake is presented with a British touch, very nutty and delightful.     Moved from Sai Ying Pun to Causeway Bay, Seoulmate Cafe still keeps its courtyard and wooden swing at the outdoor terrace behind its new location. The Korean cafe feels pretty homey, serving up unique food and drink items with their usual Korean flavor. Seoulmate Cafe The Menu 餐牌 The list of new appetizers on the menu includes a beef carpaccio, which I believe they have used Korean beef and presented in an Italian way. The beef flavor could be stronger while topped with arugula, sliced onion and croutons. Another is a sharing portion 10 inches thin crust pizza, with a very crunchy edges, tomato sauce, melted cheese and chopped beef marinated in bulgogi sauce. The lava egg is not runny but the rice is nice to toss with carrot and cucumber shreds, pumpkin puree, nori and most importantly, the flavorful, spicy and delicious bibimbap sauce. The restaurant is very intimate and spacious, serving not only traditional but innovative Hong Kong cuisine with a little modern twist. First things first, their menu is presented on an iPad for which we can also take our own orders. Our choice of starter comes next, which is a deep fried bean curd with an incredibly thin crunchy coating and a soft tofu center, seasoned with spicy salt and I recommend having it with worcestershire sauce. Wintermelon Marinated with Chinese Plum 話梅冬瓜 Deep Fried Diced Bean Curd in Spicy Salt 黃金椒鹽脆豆腐 Duck web is always my favourite among all other expensive “high class” Cantonese dishes, especially when it is prepared with the Hong-Kong-style abalone sauce. This is definitely delicious so as the abalone which is braised amazingly soft and tender.   14. Settled at the buzzing Harbour City inside LCX, it is the Korean bistro and restaurant, also the first overseas branch of The Joomak. It has a stunning harbour view with an edgy interior design, along with K-pop background music, it serves some Korean fusion cuisine. The Joomak The Restaurant View 餐廳景色 One of the restaurant signatures and must-have would be a Mate Tea 4C°C Noodle. It is basically thin soba noodle served with assorted sides including sliced cucumber, kimchi, Korean pear and a soft boiled egg; they also offer choices of meat (pork or beef) to vegetarian. Served aside a herb and yuzu sauce, it is sharp-flavored but very palatable. Such as an avocado and lime fried chicken, the sauce is thick and creamy with a hint of tanginess from the lime. The deboned chicken meat is juicy on the inside and crunchy on the outside, thickly battered and sprinkled with a particularly flavoursome cheese powder.     Tucked away down an underground space on Wyndham Street, Bao Bei is still the made-in-Hong-Kong eatery and bar located in the nightlife hub of Hong Kong. Introducing a brand new menu a year after, it still serves small plates of east-meet-west dishes with a playful and modern presentation. Bao Bei Bao Bei A Sichuan Edamame to start, seasoned with hot Sichuan pepper and chili oil. Followed by thinly sliced pork belly with chili garlic sauce, and a very refreshing hand-pulled chicken salad with mixed greens and a moreish wasabi sesame dressing.
