Dim Sum 點心

Hongkonger use to say "yum cha" 飲茶. Any Chinese restaurants will do, but if you are looking for better quality, better service & better environment with relatively reasonable price, try these Chinese restaurants:

Cha Charn Teng 茶餐廳

A famous gourmet culture of HK. This is a must-try other than Dim Sum. Following are some famous Cha Charn Teng:

  • Australia Dairy Company 澳洲牛奶公司 - 47-49 Parkes Street, Jordan 佐敦白加士街47號地下
  • Tsui Wah Restaurant 翠華餐廳 - This cha charn teng group was owned by the 4th wife of the Gambling Tycoon in Macau. They are quite a lot of branches in HK. The main branch is located at Wellington Street of Central.

Hong Kong Style Hawker Stall 大排檔

Another famous gourmet culture of HK. Following are some famous hawker stall:

  • Sing Heung Yuen 勝香園 - This one you must have seen quite a few times from HK TV Drama! - Address : 2 Mei Lun Street, Central 中環美輪街2號排檔
  • Lan Fong Yuen 蘭芳園 - 2 Gage Street, Central 中環結志街2號 Tel 2850 8683

Egg Tart 蛋撻 & Polo Bau 菠蘿包

Any bakery shop will do. Some old style "cha charn teng" 茶餐廳 would have them sold outside their shop. I always like those egg tarts sold in those little old-fashioned bakery instead of those grand-looking chain bakery, 'coz the price is cheaper and taste is more traditional. If you're looking for the best, try these:

Wanton Noodle 雲吞麵

Those small noodle stalls offer cheap and yummy wanton noodle! You can find these noodle stalls in Mongkok, especially along the street beside Woman Street (forgot the street name... ) Some of them costs HK$12 only, with 3 pieces of big big shrimp wanton!! Some of the shops sell at a bit higher price like HK$18-24, but with more variety in their menu. If you're looking for some famous one, can try these:

Porridge (粥, we usually call it Congee)

  • Ocean Empired 海皇粥店 is the best I think! Must try 炸兩 (油炸鬼 wrapped in Cheung fun), best of the best in 海皇粥店!!

Seafood

There are lots of restaurant offer cook-to-order seafood dishes. You pick the live seafood and then tell the staff how you'd like the seafood to be cooked. Famous places are Sai Kung & Lei Yue Mun in downtown, Lamma Island & Cheung Chau on outlying islands. However this kind of fresh cook-to-order seafood is generally more expensive than other Chinese restaurants.

Taiwanese "Pearl milk tea" 珍珠奶茶

Nowadays, there are many small stalls opened on main street in busy district or even in shopping arcades. Most of them are brands originated from Taiwan, e.g. Come Buy, Gong Cha 貢茶 are getting popular recently, but they are take-away... If you prefer to have a seat to relax and enjoy, can try these:

Put Jai Ko 砵仔糕

No specialty shop selling it, can try to find in some street hawkers or small bakery shops.

Smelly Tofu 臭豆腐

Normally sold in most street hawkers in Mong Kok, Tsim Sha Tsui & Causeway Bay.

Hung Dau Bing "Red Bean Ice" 紅豆冰

This can be found in most "cha charn teng" 茶餐廳 & fast food restaurants e.g. Fairwood 大快活, Cafe de Coral 大家樂, Maxim 美心. All taste is more or less the same.

Steamed Egg Custard 燉蛋 & Steamed Milk Custard 燉奶

  • Yee Shun Dairy Company 義順牛奶公司 famous for its 雙皮奶 (kind of milk pudding), address as follow:

Roasted Meat 燒味

They includes :

- Roasted Pork like "Cha Siu" 叉燒, "Siu Yuk" 燒肉(Roasted Pork Belly), Roasted Baby Pig 乳豬

- Roasted Poultry like Roasted Goose 燒鵝, Roasted Duck 燒鴨

- Cooked Poultry like "Bak chit gai" 白切雞(Boiled Chicken), "Yau gai" (油雞 i.e. braised chicken in soya sause) are also under this catagory.

All these can be found in major fast food chain, e.g. Fairwood, Cafe de Coral & Maxim's. If you prefer to try the premium one, recommend you to try

Poon Choi (盆菜), also known as Big Bowl Feast, is a traditional Cantonese cuisine originated from Hong Kong villages. It's usually served during festivals, special occasions, and even wedding banquets held in open area of those walled villages in New Territories. Chinese New Year is one of the special occasions that locals use to have poon choi, so you might get a chance to try this around CNY~

Just like turkey as a traditional food for celebrating Thanksgiving in Western countries, steamed cakes like New Year Cake, Turnip Cake and Taro Cake are the traditional food for Chinese New Year in Hong Kong. Remember to try some and get to taste the local flavour if you're visiting Hong Kong around Chinese New Year!

Steamed Rice for breakfast, anyone? Chicken Feet and Spare Ribs Rice, which is usually served in the morning till noon, is one of the typical steamed rice that could be found in every Chinese restaurant or dim sum restaurant.
