eGG meets Xiao Tian Gu – More Than Just Dessert

Xiao Tian Gu is the name of a dessert place at Tai Hang. It is a restaurant owned by a celebrity named Ku, where offers some Hong Kong-style desserts signatured in milk custard and often bustling with people during the night.

Lately, they have expanded to serve more than just desserts at the other two outlets, one in Causeway Bay and another one in collaboration with eGG, the eyewear brand, in Langham Place.
The cafe is adjacent to the eyewear shop with a white-to-pink theme color, not so massive but well-spaced and comfortable setting. Interestingly, their food menu is provided on an iPad.

I’m surprised because the baked curry rice is exceptionally good. The rice is perfectly seasoned with curry powder, the pork cutlet is nicely crispy and tender, with a thick piece of sweet pineapple and melted cheese, completed with a soft Onsen egg. The fish and chip is nothing fancy but we like it served with a horseradish mayo.

The dessert menu is plentiful, so we decided to go for two of their recommendations. The souffle French toast has a custard-like center, soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside. But we don’t enjoy and couldn’t recognize that toffee-colored sauce especially when it is conspicuously lacking sweetness, aroma and caramelization.

The Uji matcha parfait is somehow disappointing too because I simply don’t like the taste of their matcha. While it is served generously, the warabimochi, the smooth whipped cream and chocolate rice krispies in the middle, and the match jelly at the bottom are all delightful.

After all, it is the courteous services and who I am dining with that matters.
