If you have been to COMMON GROUND in Seoul Korea, you will know what a truck market would look like.
Recently, Kai Yip Estate in Kowloon Bay has reconstructed and renewed their market into a similar concept, featuring a wet market with air-conditioner and a food terminal outside. The market very large and spacious, varieties are plentiful from seafood, meat, vegetables to groceries and ready-made meals.
Along the food terminal or so-called food street, there are many popular street food and my favourite is the steamed rice rolls that is traditionally steamed in a steam cabinet, added with egg and free toppings such as pickled vegetables, minced garlic and sweet soy sauce.
It is also my first time having this Chinese mochi made with Fevervine herb and a creamy and fudgy peanut filling.

This is my third time at Alibi. While we are served with some bespoke cocktails that have been uniquely tailor-made for us, we are pairing them tonight with a new dinner menu created by Chef James Oakley, a British native Chef who used to work for Gordon Ramsay’s restaurant in London as well as other hotels and professional kitchens including Asia.

The menu features a list of small plates, bites and sweets dictating a blend of Asian and European techniques. First comes a smoky misty forest salad made with creamy goat cheese mousse, some deliciously picked mushroom and crispy parsley moss. The summer tomato salad uses a bunch of sweet, juicy and glorious cherry tomatoes to complement the finest Burrata cheese and crisp olive cake.

Some favourites are the beautifully cured salmon fillet served with beetroot foam and a savory squid ink tapioca chip, followed by the sweet crab meat with young coconut and nori cracker.
The classic Scottish egg has been reinvented using quail eggs sitting on a bed of fried leek nest; whereas my most loved dish of the night is definitely the smoked maple pigeon that has been slow-cooked perfectly pinkish, tender and juicy!

For bigger plates, I really like the black cod marinated in saikyo miso, which just melts in the mouth, and the sweet soy glazed braised beef that is made from the remainings of the prime beef sirloin.

To finish, our dinner ends with a deconstructed white chocolate miso cheesecake that combines banana puree, caramel sorbet, some cookie crumbles and dehydrated raspberries. I have particularly enjoyed it so much.

I am so grateful to be back again because it is always a cheerful and relaxing place to dine in.

One of my happiest holidays spent this Summer is at Galaxy Macau. We have a deluxe room with twin beds, providing free wi-fi service and complimentary mini bar snacks, very relaxing, elegant, convenient.

Apart from the outdoor heated pool, jacuzzi and gym, we can also access the Grand Resort Deck free of charge. We enjoyed so much at the wave pool and the white sand beach, especially the waterslides!

Not to be missed is the Sprite Shower too!

And recently, Tokichi has come and set up a pop up store at Galaxy Lobby. They are serving some matcha & houjicha jelly cup; we also get a poutine from New York Fries, some crispy thin cut fries topped with bolognese and melted cheese.

Finally, you should definitely visit the Taipa Old Village which is just opposite to the hotel.

Further along the same street from 新鴻發咖啡美食, there is a newly opened dessert spot where sells egg puffs and yogurt ice cream. Aiming to serve not only plentiful flavors of ice cream, they in fact ferment their own low-fat yogurt so to make it less sweet and much healthier

The menu features a list of mix and match ingredients starting from chocolate brownies, oreo cookies, to fruits like strawberries and mango, as well as a few limited editions including musang king durian and oreo red velvet.

We always look for our two favourites ingredients and luckily they have a combination of oreo x strawberry! Two to three layers of rolled yogurt topped with chocolate wafer rolls, two mini ice cream candies and a piece of golden Oreo; the yogurt has an merely sticky, thick and creamy texture, fresh and strong strawberry flavors mixed with crushed oreo.

The serving is surprisingly huge and it is best to share between the two!

Opposite to Galaxy Hotel is the Taipa Village of Macau, where has been redeveloped for its rich heritage by the local government. It holds a lot of well-known and popular eateries, some of them includes Seng Cheong Restaurant, Mok Yi Kei, Restaurante Dumbo and Pastry Snaffle’s etc.

One that particularly worth a mention is this little cafe which has a very eye-catching Tiffany blue colour. The restaurant space is huge and tidy, also a relaxing and old school vibe.

First comes a popcorn chicken that has been seasoned with salt and pepper. It is definitely spot on because of its excellent crispy exterior. The meat is tender while we enjoy it with mayonnaise provided on our table.

Another must-have is the bite-size french toast drizzled with a generous serving of peanut butter and condensed milk. Truth to be told, it is super thick, fluffy and delectable.

I’m sure this place is also great for a good breakfast considering the selection of sandwiches and toast, pineapple bun, instant noodle and mostly importantly, the pork chop bun.

Ngao Keo is a local restaurant that has been popularized recently, being famous for their crab roe noodle and water crab porridge.

Needless to say, I always come to 十月初五街1號 until I realize that they actually open another branch near Taipa area. The restaurant is really spacious, with an ambience just like any normal cha chan teng in Hong Kong.

For early brunch, we order shrimp toast and a signature crab roe stirred noodle. The shrimp toast is goldenly deep fried, very crispy and serve aside a Thai sweet and chili dip.
Despite the strong alkaline flavor from the thin cut noodle, the crab roe stirred noodle is still delicious and I quite enjoy the pan fried squid cake that has been loaded greatly with fresh squid.

If you are staying at the Taipa area, this branch will be much easier to locate.

Near the area of where Tealosophy Tea Bar is located, there is a hidden gem serving one of the best local noodles in Macau – Restaurant Birmanes Nga Heong.
It offers a list of Birmanes food such as cold stirred noodle, pig ear salad, roti with kaya as well as some homemade black glutinous rice soy bean milk and barley water.

A must-try is definitely their signature coconut chicken stirred noodle. It is made with thick cut “oil-noodle” that has been tossed with a tasty brown sauce, a creamy coconut cream and tender chopped chicken. It is excellent!

Another favourite is a stirred noodle with Ba La Cheong, a kind of Myanmar dried shrimp relish, giving a spicy and flavorful kick.

After all, I’m loving this place so much and it is surely recommended!

Souffle pancake has been one of the most loved Japanese desserts among Hongkongers. And recently, there is a dessert food stall opened in Mong Kok, where specializes in Japanese souffle pancakes that are made upon order.

On our visit, we have an original souffle pancake that is topped with an edible paper butterfly, sweetened whipped cream, pancake syrup and a dusting of powdered sugar. It has a really rich eggy taste, ideally soft, and I particularly like this version because it is made hot and fluffy.

Aside from the original, I Love You Dessert Bar also serves pancakes in a variety of flavors, such as red bean green tea mousse, cinnamon apple, sesame cream cheese and serradura cream cheese etc.

There are as well waffle with ice cream and pancake mille-feuille you might wanna try.

Everyone coming to Mong Kok should have known about the extremely popular Santo’s deep fried chicken leg. It was first started in Tai Po, a little takeaway food stall that serves two types of chicken legs, deep fried and soy sauce marinated.

Being here at one of their new outlets, they are now having a variety of snacks and drinks on the menu. Such as cream soda float and coca cola float.

We have a signature deep fried chicken leg, coated thoroughly with breadcrumbs. The size is gigantic, nicely fried to golden brown, juicy and tender on the inside. Even though I really like deep fried chicken leg, especially those with a crispy exterior, I still like Hot-Star Large Fried Chicken is better.

Adapted from Sally’s baking addiction

Ingredients:
3/4 cup salted butter, softened to room temperature
2/3 cup packed dark brown sugar
1 large egg, at room temperature
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups all purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 cup roasted pistachio, finely chopped
1/2 cup coarse sugar for rolling
8 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips, melted

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl, beat together butter and sugar until fluffy and creamy. Add egg, vanilla and beat until fully combined.
  2. To the wet ingredient, add flour and ground cinnamon. Slowly mix together and fold in 3/4 cup chopped pistachio.
  3. Turn the dough onto a floured work surface, roll into 2 8-inch log and wrap tightly with cling film. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  4. Preheat oven to 180C. Line baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.
  5. Remove cookie dough from the fridge and roll in coarse sugar. Slice each into 12 thick cookies and place on prepared baking sheet. Bake for 15 minutes, or until edges turn golden brown. Allow to cool for 5 minutes and transfer to cooling rack to cool completely.
  6. Melt semi-sweet chocolate chips in a microwave, 30 seconds increments. Stir to melt. Dip each cookie halfway into chocolate and sprinkle with remaining chopped hazelnuts. Let it set.

Warren, the restaurant, isn’t an easy place to find. It is on the ground floor of The Warren, a lifestyle service residence, which is a 15-seater little bistro having a cozy, not-too-casual and intimate environment located at an alleyway in Tai Hang.

Aside from the usual a la carte and set menu, they have recently introduced a brand new brunch menu. Featuring a list of basic brunch elements with a little twist of French, we started things off with an egg benedict comes accompanied by a piece of soft shell crab. The poached egg is subtly made with a gooey and soft egg yolk, covered with creamy and thick Hollandaise sauce and seated on toasted dark rye bread. Despite the soft shell crab being slightly under temperature, it works fine together on the side.

The lobster salad in crispy crepe bowl is an interesting item combining the vermilion strips of lobster meat, a handful of mixed salad leaves and a fragrant and creamy truffle mayo. The lobster is so tender and sweet, the salad is dressed deliciously with a refreshing and citrus vinaigrette, and the crepe bowl is perfectly toasted with a golden brown edges, crispy and eggy.

Considering it as a brunch, portion isn’t very fulfilling, and I wish they have more choices for drinks.

Tucked away in a small area of Happy Valley,  Locanda dell’ Angelo is a chef-owned Italian restaurant featuring a semi-open kitchen that takes up half of the narrow main dining area. It has a homey and contemporary decor, despite it is rather packed between each table.

Chef Angelo Agliano stays true to his strength and the originality of Sicilian culture in providing mostly seafood and freshly made pasta dishes on the menu. We begin by having an amuse bouche, a thick and rich lentil soup with salmon tartare. Taking a very traditional Sicilian attempt, made with a whole lots of lentils to gives a significant saltiness without adding extra seasoning.

Next is a beef carpaccio served with rocket salad, parmigiano reggiano and a tangy light mustard sauce. This classic Italian antipasti is always my favorite. When it hits my mouth, the thinly sliced bright red beef sirloin just melts away amazingly.
The baked ricotta is also looking seemingly simple but impressive. The chunks of ricotta cheese is coated with five spices that pairs so well with the sweet balsamic glaze.

Followed by Hokkaido sea urchin risotto, it is definitely creamy and sweet, with fresh wasabi and a few pieces of roasted peppers that hit me after all.
The spaghetti is excellently al dente, aglio e olio clinging on each strand of pasta. The garlic flavor isn’t very pronounced while the cured fish roe and fresh dill add a briny and bright flavor respectively.

Served with delicious sauteed spinach and cheesy polenta, the lamb chop is perfectly cooked medium rare as requested, tender and rich, which has been one of the best I have had in town!

Finally, we end with a beautiful fresh fruit salad. It is served with a refreshing raspberry sorbet and edible flower that adds a fragrant touches to this.
I really enjoy their courteous service and such intimate environment, this high end Italian restaurant is surely recommended!

The excitement was palpable when GROM first arrived Hong Kong at IFC. It is an Italian gelateria having a widespread reputation, usually of its natural and clean image.

Everyday the gelato bar serves an extensive list of over 20 flavors including the signature crema di Grom, a pastry-cream gelato with dark chocolate chips and corn biscuits; and Gianduja, a hazelnut gelato made with Peruvian chocolate.

Despite there are some healthy and tempting choices of fruit sorbets and granita siciliana, we couldn’t resist to sample a coconut and pistachio gelato. It comes in a small cup, both are very smooth and creamy, whilst the taste is definitely refined.

In addition, GROM has lately figured out a lactose and fat free treats – ghiaccioli, which is basically a 100% natural fruit popsicles made with mineral water. There are lemon, mango, strawberry and raspberry, and we tried the strawberry which is super fruity and fresh. We love it a lot!

Wise Bro is a sister branch of Cong Sao Star Dessert. They offer Cantonese desserts with modern twist and most of them are basically the same as those at Cong Sao, including the signature sorbet.

Coming to the Yuen Long branch, this dessert place has a very cosy and modern decor, with lots of celebrities’ signatures on the wall of lockers.

Given the menu features plenty of fruity choices from sorbets, sago, sweet tofu pudding, grass jelly to traditional sweet soup, a strawberry sorbet is surely a staple here.
I ask for the version with grass jelly instead of sago and nata de coco because I never like the chewy texture of the latter two. The strawberry flavor is so refreshing and fragrant, topped with half a fresh strawberry but the grass jelly has not been defrosted thoroughly.

The durian milkshake custard is a recommended one, with a silky milk custard base, a layer of durian milkshake and a generous spoonful of durian flesh. It is so heavy but delicious.

This place is one of those hard-to-reach because there isn’t any nearby MTR station. We drive here on a Sunday afternoon, following the GPS and realizing that it is actually a really small fishball shop.

Selling as well grilled eel rice and Thai chicken rice, their signature is the scrambled egg sandwiches that come in a variety of filling. For example, parma ham, foie gras, minced beef, king crab leg and century egg with pork floss.

We opt for a delicious combination of grilled eel with scrambled egg. The egg is incredibly fluffy and soft, with a molten texture, sitting on a piece of grilled eel and white bread. The whole plate is sprinkled with nori powder but it doesn’t contribute much to the flavor.

There are also steamed rice rolls, fish balls and other street snacks; believe it or not, they even make their homemade milk tea and yinyang!

“Hao Bao”, literally means a good bun or sandwich. Set at the corner of Sai Ching Street in Yuen Long, it is a takeout sandwich shop famous for their boneless chicken wings. Their wings are deboned nicely into wingettes and marinated in 3 flavors including garlic & spice, honey and pesto.

The honey boneless chicken wing is my favourite, which is grilled nicely upon order and put in three inside the homemade ciabatta. The wingettes are definitely tender and juicy, while sandwiched with fresh lettuce, sliced cucumber and mayo in the soft and crusty ciabatta.

Another choice is a rice set topped with garlic and spice chicken wings and some chopped pickled Chinese long beans. The chicken is so well-marinated with a strong garlic flavor whereas the pickled beans is a bit too spicy for me. The set also includes a complimentary bottle drink, and I really like this refreshing and health-ish ginger chrys honey drink!

Little Creatures is always known for its old fashioned Australian service. And while the restaurant, where is set at the photogenic waterfront in Kennedy Town, continues to serve their most popular and house-brew beers, they are now offering a completely new Spring menu this month.

Their name is inspired by the living yeast that activates to make beer. There are 10 beers on tap and one cider, so we begin with a tasting paddle including six sample of the brewery’s top creations. My favourite is the Pale Ale that is not so strong and is an American classic.

Our dinner starts with a grilled halloumi salad. The brined cheese made with goat’s and sheep’s milk is chopped and grilled serving on a bed of cherry tomatoes, mixed greens, with a light dressing seasoned with sumac. The lamb skewers are also very well seasoned, served with mint yogurt and tangy sumac onions.

Some favourites are the hanger steak, which we requested for medium rare doneness and is cooked just perfectly juicy and tender; crab fettuccine, which is cooked excellently al dente, in a delicious and hearty seafood broth.  A side dish of hand cut fries is also worth mentioning because it comes with a creamy and addictive truffle mayo that I absolutely adore!

I could not leaving without getting a dessert. There are a few tempting ones including the pear tarte tatin with that remarkable pistachio ice cream, but I know it would be too big for two of us to share. So we opt for a coconut panna cotta which turns out to be a huge silky pudding with a scoop of homemade mango ice cream, chili mango salsa and toasted sesame seeds. It is very impressive!

All in all, food portion is surely big and I really enjoy the atmosphere. It is definitely a spot for big groups.

On Sunday, we pay a visit to Lei Yue Mun for walk. It is a fishing village, a quick channel between Tseung Kwan O and Victoria Harbour where is renowned for alfresco seafood dining. In short, there are a historical Tin Hau Temple, a wish tree and the lighthouse beside the harbour.

We come across a cha chaan teng which apparently has gained many reputations and is awarded for one of the best milk teas in Hong Kong.

The menu is simply about toast or instant noodle, but a few interesting options such as a french toast made with egg white and Chinese fermented bean curd. The french toast is a bit overdone, with a salty filling and topped with a slab of butter. They provide condensed milk at each table but I personally prefer adding simple syrup.

For drinks, we love the mango and yakult smoothie, very refreshing; but the lemongrass honey tastes very bland and is nearly flavorless.

For your record, they are also famous for their homemade mango pudding. Give them a try if by chance you come to Lei Yue Mun next time :)

On the other side of Lo Tak Court (i.e. 路德圍) in Tsuen Wan, it is Hau Tei Square where you can also find many street food such as the one that particularly worth a mention – Smoked Tamago. It sells my favourite food on earth –  tamagoyaki, offering limited but interesting choices from savoury versions such as original and sakura shrimp, to sweet version such as brown sugar, caramelized apple and purple sweet potato!

So basically it is made by rolling together several thin layers of grilled egg to form a fluffy and delicate omelette. We got each of us a seaweed mentaiko and cheese with black truffle. The former one is filled with a generous serving of mentaiko filling, pretty salty but well balanced by the sweet and fluffy egg; whereas the latter one has an excellent truffle aroma, the egg is sweeter and so delicate!

The next door is InTaste, where sells some barbecue wraps. Ours is a grilled shrimp, made fresh upon order, with a whole lots of Thousand Island dressing and fresh lettuce. It was pretty filling too.

It is a lazy Wednesday afternoon when me and my friend explore the other side of Tsuen Wan – Hau Tei Square. We come to the newly opened Aroma Dessert Cafe, a recently popped up souffle pancake cafe where also offers other sorts of desserts such as waffle, molten lava cake, mille feuille at this simple, chic and warm environment.

On the menu is a seasonal matcha pancake that looks pretty attractive but then we end up getting a white peach pancake with yakult ice cream and yogurt. The two stacks of souffle pancakes are freshly made, so thick and soft, but honestly it ain’t as fluffy as the one I tried at Pan de Pain. It is served with some slices of sweet Japanese peach, sweetened whipped cream and caramel sauce for embellishments.

The parfait is basically everything that capture the heart of a chocoholic. It combines chocolate ice cream, chocolate macarons, fresh banana slices, two generous layers of whipped cream and milo cereal at the bottom. It is topped with an exceptional mini lava cake, and I particularly like the caramelized almond on the side.

This place is alright for a simple dessert break, and make sure you don’t come too early because they open at late afternoon.

Set on the highest floor of EAST hotel in Tai Koo Shing, Sugar is a rooftop bar, a deck, as well as a lounge for whom want a drink or light snack to chill out. They serve not only sublime and original cocktails, but also a list of exquisite international tapas.

Tonight, we come to savor their brand new Mediterranean-inspired menu while admiring the breath-taking sunset moment of Hong Kong. There are manchego cheese croquette, grilled prawns with watermelon and feta salad, my favourite is the vegetarian thin-crust pizza topped with cherry tomato, mushroom, olive, spinach and artichokes; it has a perfectly crispy edges and cheesy base.

The new cocktail lists also includes some amazing creations, for which we have tried a Cypriot Punch with a stunning light blue color and a smoothie-like Turkish March, which is a mix of Malibu, cucumber, greek yogurt, honey and chili powder.

Final verdict, Sugar is the perfect drinking spot with such fantastic view!

While the proliferation continues with so many ramen restaurants opening in Hong Kong, we should be reminded of a little-known ramen joint where also offers this great value and hearty Japanese noodle – Butadouraku in Tsuen Wan.

It is located just a few blocks away from Tsuen Wan food street, a small space set mainly with countertops and free charger at each table. The menu features 4 broths and 2 types of noodles, including an original pork bone soup base, mayu (i.e. black garlic oil) base, spicy pork bone soup base, the signature wasabi with cheese soup base; and thick wavy noodle or thin straight noodle.

It is hard to choose so I decide to get a seasonal special, Gyokai Tonkotsu Ramen. This bowl comes with thin noodle and a thick broth cooked with a mix of seafood and pork bone.
The pork belly is slightly seared and thinly sliced so as the pork shoulder which tastes unusually gamey unfortunately. I particularly like my nori dipping in the strong-flavored broth and the soft runny boiled egg that has been marinated in soy sauce.

Next up is the black garlic oil ramen having similar ingredients except there is black fungus instead of bamboo shoot. The pork bone broth is relatively rich and oily whilst the thick wavy noodle is cooked perfectly chewy and tender. The Korean-styled charsiu ordered on the side is well-glazed with garlic honey, flavor is unexpected but tastes very gamey again.

All in all, their ramens are delicious and we don’t find it too thirsty after. I’m also glad to try the first sip of matcha coca cola as well as a refreshing ripe peach soda sourced from Japan.

Tucked away in a hidden corner at Sau Wa Fong in Wan Chai, you will find an artisanal cafe – Jouer, which literally means “play” in French. The idea of combining a gallery-style cafe and lifestyle concept retail store introduces a space where sells not only home product and accessories, but also some east-meets-west French pastry and drinks to be served.

The new menu includes some savoury options such as English scones, mushroom tarts and leek & asparagus quiche; whereas their desserts are need not to be mentioned.

Naked layered cakes are available in baby-size for two which is perfect for us to tried all three flavors. From raspberry lemonade, s’mores and banoffee, the banoffee is my favourite because it is layered with chocolate crunch and sticky caramel, whereas the s’mores is generously topped with burnt mini marshmallow. However, the raspberry lemonade seems lacking some butteriness and a pronounced flavor.

Renowned for their housemade macarons, they feature a few special flavors each month. There are European-inspired foie gras, French blue cheese, tarte tatin and French onion soup; my favourite is no doubt the Asian-inspired Hong Kong milk tea.

Given the fact that Jouer’s owner loves cocktails, their drinks are so beautifully displayed. Together with such homey affairs, it is a definite aesthetic pleasure here.

Departing from Pier 9 in Central today, we go on to Aqua Luna II, a brand new addition to the Aqua Luna family, also a magnificent Chinese junk boat that wholly represents Hong Kong.

The harbour cruise is about 45 minutes sailing across the Victoria Harbour between Central and the fishing harbour on the Southern district, featuring a discovery tour of stunning Hong Kong such as the Ocean Park and the Jumbo Restaurant.

While appreciating the hand-crafted and traditional design of the boat on my comfy lounge bed, we are served with some light refreshments delivered by Dim Sum Library, as well as complimentary red wine, white wine, fruit juices and soda. The oolong ice cream is so delicious!
It’s definitely incredible to savour the stunning skyline of our motherland on this enjoyable tour.

While the Dragon Boat Race is about to begin next month, make sure to grab a sit and reserve now on their website before it’s too late!
