Thanks to Hong Kong's Octopus Inc for sending me the latest collection of got milk? straws.

DSC_1588.jpg

There were six flavours: banana, strawberry, cookies and cream, chocolate, wild berry and orange cream.

I only managed to take one photo of the magic straws in action because it was hard taking a photo whilst drinking it.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Banana:

The banana was quite sweet with a strong vanilla taste and a hint of banana which tasted natrual.

DSC04600.JPG

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Strawberry:

I was expecting the strawberry taste to be strong but it was not.

DSC04602.JPG

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Cookies & Cream:

The taste of this was similar to the chocolate but it was not so chocolatety.

Visually it was really pretty with the contrast of white and brown in the straws.

DSC04603.JPG

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Wild berry:

The taste of this was interesting and reminded me of something which I can't remember!

It may have been Hubba Bubba chewing gum, but it was definitely a Western candy.

DSC04604.JPG

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Chocolate:

This was my favourite flavour and probably the most popular flavour because it is just fuss free simple tasting chocolate.

DSC04606.JPG

Here is a photo of the chocolate in action

DSC04607.JPG

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

I also had fun trying two different flavours together.

Here are the combinations I tried:

Strawberry and Wild berry

DSC04605.JPG

The combination of strawberry and wild berry resulted in a wonderful fruit of the forest flavour.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Cookies & Cream with banana:

The flavour was quite cute and tasted like banoffee pie.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Orange cream with chocolate:

Orange and chocolate always pair well resulting in delicious chocolate with tones of orange!

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

As a summary, chocolate was the best, next was the banana which was surprisingly good because it was not artificial and then orange cream.

Each magic straw is sufficient to flavour one glass of milk.

Crispi I Fruits

Got these vacuum dried fruits from Octopus Inc or you can get them here:

http://shop.ilovemama.com/deals/20140225d_driedfruit/

There was freeze dried pineapples, longans and bananas which I have not tried before.

DSC_1602.jpg

It feels really interesting holding a bag of these vacuum dried fruits because I love the clinking noise it makes when you rattle the bag just like pieces of ceramics clinking together and it feels so weightless too because all the water has been drawn out in the vacuuming process.

I love vacuum dried items because it keeps the nutrients while the flavour gets concentrated and intense.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Banana:

Usually banana chips are fried so it was good to try the vacuum dried version which are non oily and crispy. The fried version is really hard and not so nice.

DSC04486.JPG

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Longan:

The vacuum dried Longans were quite sweet but then the fresh ones are real sweet anyway and the colour was interestingly brown.

DSC04491.JPG

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Pineapple:

The vacuum dried pineapples taste better than fresh ones because I've never liked them fresh as they were too juicy and the fibres were woody.

But as a vacuum dried snack, the fibres are brittle and the pineapple pieces are crispy with natrual tartness of the pineapple.

Got these teabags from Octopus Inc.

There were two flavours: Lemongrass and Lemongrass with Pandanus leaves.

Each box contains 16 pyramid tea bags.

DSC_1577.jpg
 DSC_1578.jpg

 DSC_1579.jpg

++++++++++++++

I must admit I am not a fan of Lemongrass but the smell is not annoying as the ones you find in Asian restaurants.

DSC04501.JPG

++++++++++++++

The Lemongrass with Pandanus leaves were really calming and soothing because the smell and taste was really pleasant.

DSC04500.JPG
++++++++++++++

They also have Longan Beverage powder too.

If I did not get this from Octopus Inc, I would not have known about this drink!

The Longan hot beverage is a lovely comforting drink for the winter

DSC_1593.jpg

DSC_1594.jpg

DSC_1595.jpg
All you do is add water to it, and the drink is slightly thick but not viscous with a lovely hint of longan.

DSC04499.JPG
For a stronger Longan taste you can add some freeze dried longan into it or add less than the required water.

Other drinks in this series are:

Pure lemongrass tea

Pure lemongrass tea with Pandanus leaves

I have to admit, I am a big kid! So when I got these cookies from Octopus Inc I had fun taking them out of the packet to see what animals were inside before eating them.

These cookies were just as fun for me as well as for children, especially for lunch boxes or when kids are travelling.

Each flavour has a colourfully designed boxed with a theme on it.

DSC_1601.jpg
It comes in four flavours: Vanilla, Chocolate, Chocolate chip and Cinnamon grahams.

All the cookies tasted natural and did not have any weird aftertaste nor were they oily.

My favourite flavours were the Chocolate and Vanilla which brought back memories as a kid and the biscuits back then because of the taste.

Pretzels are boring on their own, but when they're filled with Peanut butter, now that's a different story!

These POCKET PRETZELS are addictive!

Basically boring Pretzels made delicious.

DSC_1580.jpg

DSC_1581.jpg

I loved the salty surface of the Pretzel pockets and inside it was filled was delicious velvety peanut butter.

DSC_1583.jpg

DSC_1587.jpg

Anyway, this is a popular American snack which I haven't seen before in the UK.

DSC_1582.jpg
Thanks to Octopus Inc for sending me a packet or I would not have tried such a delicious snack.

I will definitely get a stash for my friends back in the UK from Hong Kong!!

Godiva Chocolatier (Tsim Sha Tsui)

Thanks to LT for these Godiva chocolates.

To be honest, I have never bought any Godiva chocolates before and I still havent tried the famous softserve icecream.

The only Godiva item I did try a while ago was the chocolate frappe with raspberry.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Godiva chocolate:

00TGXIA317E641E71C218Fm.jpg

It was smooth and velvety.

00TGXJ2C2F60C768489F59m.jpg

The sweetness was just right without any unpleasant aftertaste because some other brands use vegetable oils and not cocoa butter.

From the appearance, you could be easily fooled thinking it was a tiny Cornetto!

But it is actually a non-icecream confectionary!!

DSC04175.JPG

DSC04177.JPG

DSC04178.JPG

Wrapped just like the real thing, there is a real wafer cone inside with Vanilla filling topped with nuts and chocolate.

DSC04180.JPG

DSC04181.JPG

DSC04183.JPG

At the bottom of the cone, it is also has chocolate too!

DSC04185.JPG

The taste was quite interesting because the vanilla icecream was mimicked by whipped vanilla cream and it was enjoyable and fun eating it!

The first non melting cornetto!

The small white pearlescent bottle caught my attention.

DSC03932.JPG

DSC03933.JPG

After taking a closer look, I realized it was Sparkling soy water! How interesting because I have never seen soy water before.

Usually soymilk comes in milk form so I was really curious whether the drink would be clear of milky!~

It is interesting because from their website, they are a pharmaceutical company.

http://www.otsuka.co.jp/en/company/release/2011/0202_01.html

I am not sure if the drink contains alcohol but the English labelling from the supermarket says: soy cider!

There was an interesting ring pull design to open the bottle, once it was opened, the drink inside was a milky white colour.

DSC03934.JPG

DSC03935.JPG

The taste was quite milky and smooth but not too sweet with a fizz.

There was a really nasty artificial banana smell with a hint of banana and minty aftertaste just like medicine probably because it is produced by a pharmaceutical company!

Also from their website, SoyJoy bars are made by them too which I have tried before.

http://www.otsuka.co.jp/en/product/soyjoy/

I would love to try the Fruity Tomato soyjoy bar and the Prune Fe Plus soyjoy bar if I could find them.

I have always wanted to try these magic straws that are said to flavour your milk.

Finally saw a place that had them and tried the chocolate.

They had other flavours too:

Wild berry, cookies and cream, orange and cream, chocolate and strawberry.

For the full range see:

NEW fun flavors coming in 2014!

Cotton Candy, Banana Split, Candy Corn and Rootbeer Float

Limited edition flavors!

Neapolitan, Cinnamon Roll and Chocolate Candy Cane
DSC04144.JPG

DSC04143.JPG

I tried the chocolate and it was really nice because the milk is flavoured instantly by chocolate and it is not too sweet.

It makes plain milk taste better and a good way to increase daily calcium intake.

Basically, the straw is filled with tiny balls of compressed chocolate powder so that when you suck the straw, the milk is flavoured by the chocolate when it passes up the straw.

Someone drinking it!

(Obviously not my hand because he has a really chubby hand)

I was surprised to see instant wontons because they usually come frozen or freshly made to be cooked.

DSC_1398.jpg
There were quite a few flavours but I got the one with seaweed because I like seaweed.

DSC_1399.jpg
Basically it contained dried wontons and a sachet of soup base.

DSC_1400.jpg

It was simple to prepare, just open the lid, put the sachet of soup on the bowl, and add water to the line!

DSC_1401.jpg

After a few minutes, the wontons were soft with pieces of shiitake mushrooms and seaweed floating in the soup.

DSC_1402.jpg
The soup was quite nice and the wontons were smaller filled with grounded meat that was not as fatty as the fresh ones.

After googling it, I was surprised that it is a best seller in Japan and their brand came as early as 1993.

See supplemetary info from their pdf report.

http://www.maruchan.co.jp/ir/ar/documents/06_07404236_touyousuisann_hpkeisaiyou_000.pdf

Not only are they popular in Japan, they are popular in the US with a separate website too.

Not a fan of these bear shaped biscuits filled with chocolate creme because the biscuit tastes weird and the chocolate tastes off!

The one with strawberry filling was really artificial, I could smell it a metre away when this kid opened it!

After trying some chestnut yoghurt yesterday, I was surprised to see Chestnut Hokkaido-Yo from Circle K, now shortened to Ho-Yo according to the poster!!

DSC_1375.jpg
Finally tried it and I felt that it lacked chestnut taste and it just tasted like Tiramisu/Coffee.

I love snacks soaked in Chinese wine but the ones by Original Taste all have bones (i.e ducks tongue, pork knuckles and chicken feet).

originatastquid.jpg

I was glad there is now Squid to choose from because it was delicious, the wine has a really nice savory taste and the texture of the squid is really springy flavoured with the wine.

originatastquid+(1).jpg
Next time I am going to put them on my instant noodles/cup noodles with the wine as well.

The first time I had green tea fondant cake was at Sinmei’s and then the Intercontinental hotel.

Now you can get it from Circle K convenience stores for $9.9.

DSC_1376.jpg

Before putting it in the microwave:

DSC_1377.jpg

After I took it out from the microwave, I was shocked to see the fondant had burst in the centre which was kind of funny. FXXK! Bursting and not molten cake! 頂!!!!爆心蛋糕

DSC_1378.jpg

As for the taste, it was really nice and not too sweet with a strong green tea taste.

Cheese flavoured seaweed! That's a first!

DSC_1343.jpg

Although it is a Korean product, there was Thai on the labeling too.

DSC_1344.jpg

When I opened the resealable bag, there was a really strong cheese smell.

(It was a little bit artificial for my liking).

DSC_1347.jpg

The pieces of seaweed were small and annoying just like toppings.

DSC_1348.jpg

As for the taste, it was very cheesy and savory but too salty.

Initially I did not notice the special edition cup noodles by Acecook because it was Black and did not stand out on the shelf.

Anyway, the black wrapping was quite classy and it was SQUID flavoured too!

It was the first time I came across squid flavoured cup noodles.

DSC_1350.jpg
 DSC_1351.jpg

 DSC_1353.jpg

Inside the box, there was a sachet of liquid sauce and a sachet of condiments containing dried squid and cabbage.

DSC_1356.jpg
After the pouring away the water in the custom made drainage holes on the corner, the noodles were ready to be mixed with sauce.

DSC_1355.jpg
Mixing sauce into it

DSC_1357.jpg
DSC_1358.jpg
The taste was a bit disappointing because the squid taste was not obvious and the colour was not as black as I hope for squid ink.

The chestnut yoghurt was contained in a pretty glass jar and at the bottom there was a thin layer of chestnut puree.

DSC_1335.jpg

DSC_1336.jpg

The yoghurt had a lovely tart taste while the sweet starchy chestnut puree at the bottom balanced the tartness of the yoghurt.

It had nice tones of vanilla with visible vanilla seeds in it.

Thanks to Lemon Tea for these delicious Tom Yum Kung flavoured PRETZ sticks by Glico in Thailand.

DSC_1375.jpg

DSC_1376.jpg

DSC_1377.jpg

The flavour of these were intense and savory, with hints of lemon, lemongrass and they were quite spicy too with a spicy aftertaste.

The hint of lemon was the best with visible herbs on the Pretz sticks.

After eating half the packet, my tastebuds became accustomed to the spices and they smelt and tasted like the savory lemon puffs by the Garden brand.

Microwaved taro

I love taro but it seems too bothersome to cook because it is similar to a potato where you have to peel off the skin.

What's worse is that the Taro skin is muddy and uneven.

Just for fun I microwaved dry it to see if it was a possible solution.

DSC_1360.jpg

After microwaving it for 6 minutes, the results were quite good, the skin on the outside became dry and separated from the taro and it was easy to peel off.

However some parts of the taro were really dry, but the moist part was edible.

(For bigger taros, longer microwaving time may be required.)
I ate them plain, so there was not much taste but the texture was quite viscous.

For more flavouring, I am just going to add salt next time and maybe I will try turn it over halfway through and then microwave it again to see if it helps reduce the dryness.

Thanks to Ivy for getting me these freeze dried strawberry slices.

Interestingly they are Korean.

I had the illusion they were from Israel or the middle east because the brand is called Hephzibah which sounds Middle eastern and in the middle east, there are lots of dried fruit produces because of the climate.

00S04792E59A99B62D594Em.jpg

The strawberry slices were crispy and the taste was really impressive because it was natrually sour which meant there were no artificial sweeteners.

00S048D79D56B447E87011m.jpg

The smell of fresh strawberries could be smelt from the slices.
