Mooncakes

Recommended Posts

Hi Northasian,

I will be going to HK this Saturday and will be there for a week. Am planning to buy mooncakes in HK. Where can I buy them from? Any recommendations on which shop is famous for mooncakes? Around how much would it be?

Thanks!

Hi jocsp,

What type of mooncake you wanna buy? Traditional type with lotus seed paste + egg yolk or snowy mooncake or mini egg custard mooncake?

FYI my personal favourites are :

* Traditional - Maxim's (Can buy from their bakery branches/Chinese restaurants) and Kee Wah

* Snowy - Tai Pan Bakery (many branches, there is one temporary shop near Fa Yuen Street North in Prince Edward)

* Egg custard - Tsui Hang Chuen Restaurant (inside Miramar Shopping Centre in Tsim Sha Tsui) and Peninsula Hotel

Am actually looking at the traditional ones. Not sure what is mini egg custard mooncake. I can only buy those which is vacuum packed cos I will be bringing it back. May I know what is the price range for mooncakes in HK?

Then I would recommend Maxim's, Kee Wah Bakery and also Hang Heung for the tranditional one. Price range is about HKD200-300 per box of 4 normal size mooncakes if buying on the spot. For mini egg custard mooncake, you can take a look at my food blog that last year I've featured one of my favourte egg custard mooncake :

FYI, mooncakes in HK are normally not vacuum packed. They are only individually packed but usually good for 1 month stored in dry & cool place.
