Maple Tree House has been an excellent choice for Korean barbecue. They have several branches and most of them are conveniently located at Seoul in Itaewon, Myeong dong and Gangnamgu respectively.

The restaurant is set with a modern ambience, where serves a consistent varieties of meats with few condiments, bibimbap and cold noodles.

While the serving is considerably smaller than expected, the high quality is indeed impressive such as the premium Korean beef strip loin with perfect marbling of fat and the pork collar that is very juicy and tender.
The marinated beef is also flavorful due to the sweet marination that is believed to contain pear and onion.

To add on, the staff is young and helpful, who also grilled the meat for you just right on time.

When I heard that the place Lobster Central had opened in Central on Stanley Street, I’m thrilled to test out if it could nailed a buttery, creamy and satiated lobster roll.

This fast food chain offers a simple menu, essentially three choice of rolls including Boston lobster, crab or shrimp roll. Some lobster bisque, crab claws, truffle and sweet potato fries can also be ordered as a side.

While we are feeling a bit peckish, a set of The High Rollers let us sample a bit of everything.

The crab roll is the better one out of the three, with flavorsome claw meat of crab stuffed in brioche bun that has been madly spread with clarified butter. The other two are stuffed with tough lobster and chubby shrimp which is dressed with mayonnaise in a similar way.

Alongside are two packs of potato chips and Berrywhite organic fruit sodas, and four most disappointing crab claws that are dry and greasy. I doubt if a squeeze of fresh lemon juice would help enhance the overall taste.

Overall, it is not necessarily the worst in Hong Kong, but so far a convenient place to grab an easy-to-go lobster roll.

Here is a totally Instagram-worthy cake you gotta try in Seoul! Thanks my friend for suggesting us to come here. The cafe is so adorable and beautifully-designed with theme of pink, blue and orange, which also serves a dozen of homemade cakes in big portion. Think about red velvet, tiramisu cake, and their renowned rainbow cake.

It is basically a vanilla cream cake filled with sliced strawberries. The whipped cream is well sweetened, so light and fluffy. In comparison, the strawberry tiramisu disappointed us for it artificial strawberry cream flavor and dry sponge.

Self-serve ice water is also available at the counter in case you find the treats too sweet for your palate.

Bora, meaning purple in English, is the colour highlighting this cafe.

As one of the popular cafes in Samcheong-dong, it is signature in bingsu and soft serve ice cream that are all made from purple sweet potato.

The bingsu combines finely shaved ice, sweetened condensed milk and a creamy layer of sweet potato espuma. Some additional top ons are served on the side such as sweet potato chips, candied walnut and more sweet potato puree in case there is not enough for the bingsu.

Another must try is the homemade sweet potato ice cream. It is deletable and mildly sweetened which is so creamy, silky and lovely treat for the eyes.
The peanut flavor is also amazing but has a comparatively strong peanut aroma.

To reach Cafe Bora, take subway exit 1 at Anguk station, turn right until you see an entrance going to direction of Samcheong-dong. Continue to go straight for 10 mins then it is located on the left, opposite to a croissant taiyaki stall.

Alternatively, they offer self-pick-up arrangements at their office as well as MTR stations.

I’m sure everything knows there’s a Line Cafe in Seoul, Korea. Situated within Sinsa-dong at Gangnam area, this 3-storey shop is more than just the Line mobile app. It has items such as stationery, pillows, soft toys, where also includes a basement cafe. that wins most of Line’s fans. It features French macarons, lattes, smoothies and ice cream with Line’s characters.

We got a Brown and Cony ice cream in cups, both come with a mini cookie on top. The soft ice cream is not only cute for the look, it tastes surprisingly smooth and milky.

I’m hoping to come back again and try out their cake rolls and cream latte!!!

It has been a well spent afternoon at maison es, a lovely French garden nestled in the heart of Star Street Precinct. The interior is a sophisticated garden-themed, where includes hand-selected antiques and beautiful collectibles.

As they serve contemporary French fare with a few oriental touches, the newly launched afternoon tea set starts with elements of the Shanghaiese such as a vegetable rice roll topped with Iberico ham and smoked salmon strips and tiger prawn egg roll.

Some popular ingredients in Hu cuisine are used to combine with traditional French patisseries, think like red dates opera cake, an elegant oval scoop of chocolate mousse filled with banana and rice wine and black sesame melting cheese tart that is unfortunately not very impressive.

Cassis macaron is fairly made with berries compote, whilst my favourites are their British scones and a lusciously creamy and smooth osmanthus ice cream.

Final verdict, I think I enjoyed the environment more than the food.

A nice piece of roasted turkey is necessary for a Thanksgiving feast, especially for Americans.

Fish & Meat, hence, are now thoughtfully serving a whole free range turkey with endless sides of Italian sausage, foie gras, house-made cranberry sauce and of course turkey gravy during the Thanksgiving to Christmas season. The choices doesn’t just limit to these; Roasted Bone Marrow Mash, Garlic, Leek, Beef Jus and Sweet Corn Polenta are also some favorite classic sides available at Fish & Meat.

Coming back to such an elegant and rustic spot in Central, it has dim lightings at night that give a romantic atmosphere and the usual industrial wooden furnitures with homey family feeling.

A grass-fed beef tartare has become a great start of the meal. Dressed with a large duck egg yolk, parmesan shaves, and lighten up with leaves of arugula.

Some new additions on the starter menu are chargrilled asparagus with jamon serrano and an addicting roasted red pepper based romesco sauce with a nutty texture; a more complex flavor of seared foie gras with turmeric crispy veal sweetbread that has an aesthetically pleasant presentation as well as the most favourite thick-cut salmon, which has been cured in house, goes with sour cream and salmon caviar.

As for our Thanksgiving celebration, we are served with the whole portion of turkey from legs to breast. The turkey leg is needlessly tender and flavorful but the turkey breast also surprises me with its amazingly moist and clean cut. Some condiments of sweet cranberry sauce and brown gravy are absolutely necessary too!

A good value of lamb shank is another new item on the main course. Even though I aren’t a lamb eater, the way it is braised and slow simmered with lamb jus to a succulent piece of meat has made it irresistible to eat, especially with the crunchy peanut topping and mango sauce.

Finally, who could miss such decent desserts? Lemon curd tart with a dollop of toasted meringue, chocolate fondant with stunning molten center, it pairs perfectly with Tahitian vanilla ice cream and drizzle of thick salted caramel sauce on the side.

Opened during late September, The Optimist is a new casual dining addition at the street level of Hennessy Road in Wan Chai. It takes up three storeys featuring stunning lighting, metallic artwork and a bold downstair bar with a dining room that operates all day.
As soon as we enter the standalone floor, the homely ambience is already hitting the spot.
The down to earth menu offers a selection of Northern Spanish inspired dishes, where there are fresh market seafood, grilled prime cuts and some authentic tapas to be served.
There are set lunch in the afternoon including a regular option with one tapas, main course and dessert or coffee per person or a quick one with one tapas to go with a sandwich and an optional dessert. The two is basically quite the same and the only difference is on the mains, whether you want a bold choice of grills or just a light nibble.
A tortilla is a typical Spanish dish. Also referred as Spanish omelette consists of eggs made with thin potato wedges then fried in oil, it is surely more robust and gratifying than regular omelette. Hence, I am pleased about the humble serving. Expect it to be warm, room or even cool temperature because they are not always served hot traditionally.
Four nibbles of fried croquette have a very crispy breadcrumb coating but for some reason the creamy mushroom-flavored center does not appeal to me at all.
It sounds ridiculously stupid to order club sandwiches at a Spanish restaurant but its hearty and wholesome combination is something you can’t go wrong with.
Coming to the favourite dish, the tuna tartare is impressively fresh and seasoned really well with a Japanese dressing. The flavorful layers are also completed with avocado cube and tobiko, flying fish roe.
Eventually, the dessert is so surprising because I don’t expect it to come in a mason jar. Cheesecake in a jar, with strawberry coulis, substantial cream cheese mixture and finally cookie crumbs. It would be a solid choice for a sweet treat.

Originated from Jeju, Osulloc is possibly the best green tea producer found in Korea. Their tea cafes, where are abundantly located at Myeongdong, Hongdae, Samcheong-dong etc.,  offer a range of tea, latte, coffee drinks, as well as desserts such as cakes, cookies, ice flakes and ice cream. Not to mention the increasingly popular green tea milk jam, there are also products being sold including green tea bags, herbal teas, green tea masks and cleansing foam.

The green tea ice cream does not offer a creamy or milky texture but its sweet lightness has an aromatic and strong tea flavor.

While the tiramisu is good enough to satisfy a little mascarpone cheesy crave, the cake rolls, which come in versions of green tea cream or sweetened cream, is excellently moist and spongy.

The caramel cake roll is similarly filled with a sweet caramel cream.

Coming to my favourite item, the green tea soy latte is personally one of the best in town. It is not overly sweetened with syrup that has pleasant scent of their signature tea. The foam is smooth and thick, garnished with some roasted tea powder to give an overall comforting note.

Also, the King O Fredo is stunningly presented with delicious coconut coulis, green tea pound cakes and a generous scoop of green tea ice cream. Layered with red bean and whipped cream, the green tea frappaccino is excelled to perfection.

Warren, the restaurant, isn’t an easy place to find. It is on the ground floor of The Warren, a lifestyle service residence, which is a 15-seater little bistro having a cozy, not-too-casual and intimate environment located at an alleyway in Tai Hang.

Aside from the usual a la carte and set menu, they have recently introduced a brand new brunch menu. Featuring a list of basic brunch elements with a little twist of French, we started things off with an egg benedict comes accompanied by a piece of soft shell crab. The poached egg is subtly made with a gooey and soft egg yolk, covered with creamy and thick Hollandaise sauce and seated on toasted dark rye bread. Despite the soft shell crab being slightly under temperature, it works fine together on the side.

The lobster salad in crispy crepe bowl is an interesting item combining the vermilion strips of lobster meat, a handful of mixed salad leaves and a fragrant and creamy truffle mayo. The lobster is so tender and sweet, the salad is dressed deliciously with a refreshing and citrus vinaigrette, and the crepe bowl is perfectly toasted with a golden brown edges, crispy and eggy.

Considering it as a brunch, portion isn’t very fulfilling, and I wish they have more choices for drinks.

Tucked away in a small area of Happy Valley,  Locanda dell’ Angelo is a chef-owned Italian restaurant featuring a semi-open kitchen that takes up half of the narrow main dining area. It has a homey and contemporary decor, despite it is rather packed between each table.

Chef Angelo Agliano stays true to his strength and the originality of Sicilian culture in providing mostly seafood and freshly made pasta dishes on the menu. We begin by having an amuse bouche, a thick and rich lentil soup with salmon tartare. Taking a very traditional Sicilian attempt, made with a whole lots of lentils to gives a significant saltiness without adding extra seasoning.

Next is a beef carpaccio served with rocket salad, parmigiano reggiano and a tangy light mustard sauce. This classic Italian antipasti is always my favorite. When it hits my mouth, the thinly sliced bright red beef sirloin just melts away amazingly.
The baked ricotta is also looking seemingly simple but impressive. The chunks of ricotta cheese is coated with five spices that pairs so well with the sweet balsamic glaze.

Followed by Hokkaido sea urchin risotto, it is definitely creamy and sweet, with fresh wasabi and a few pieces of roasted peppers that hit me after all.
The spaghetti is excellently al dente, aglio e olio clinging on each strand of pasta. The garlic flavor isn’t very pronounced while the cured fish roe and fresh dill add a briny and bright flavor respectively.

Served with delicious sauteed spinach and cheesy polenta, the lamb chop is perfectly cooked medium rare as requested, tender and rich, which has been one of the best I have had in town!

Finally, we end with a beautiful fresh fruit salad. It is served with a refreshing raspberry sorbet and edible flower that adds a fragrant touches to this.
I really enjoy their courteous service and such intimate environment, this high end Italian restaurant is surely recommended!

Dating a while back, when I was still having the Dr. Oddie at the tiny takeaway shop just of Wan Chai Road, there were no seats or standing area for no more than 3 customers. Recently, the Oddies team has opened a proper gelateria at Gough street with a hip and chic interior that covers not only their big and bold creations of egg waffles, such as dan dan noodle, the signature concoction of eggette with chocolate soft serve – Night Wolf, but also cakes, cookies, meringue drops and of course, homemade Italian gelato.

At the counter fridge, there are a wide selection of flavors that one could barely imagine. Thinks like hazelnut with white chocolate potato chips, peanut butter with concord grape jelly and strawberry with balsamic caramel.

While all their gelato are basically of wonderful creamy and sticky texture with mix of add ons, my favourites are marsala fig with a milk base and I Lova You with passion fruit and raspberry coulis, colourful meringue toppings.

The burnt fingers is also one of the top three best seller that has a smoky, nutty, crunchy combination of burnt caramel, toasted almond and toffee brittle.

Additionally, they also serve jar-leto, which is gelato in jar that made like trifle with chunks of cake, thick custard and cookie crumbs.

All in all, one should never resist to try their eggettes because at the instant stepping in to the gelateria, you will notice the street-made aroma already.

There are a few seafood markets to visit in Seoul, such as the Mapo Agricultural & Marine Products Market, and shortly, the Noryangjin Fish Market. Opens 24-7, it runs with partner restaurants where you can choose and buy your own fresh seafood and bring them to the restaurant for preparation.

In comparison, this seafood market is much closer to the city center, where is just several stations apart from Seoul Station, much cozier with a bigger environment.

You can find plentiful of marine stalls whose could speak fluent Mandarin mostly. We have got a large king crab, prawns, scallop and a platter of fresh oysters.

I like to eat the fresh oyster with the red chili paste they provide; the prawns are grilled; both the scallops and king crab are steamed. The remaining crab roe from the shell is returned to the kitchen and stir fried with rice, nori and sesame seeds seasoning.

This market eatery is surely my top choice compare to the others!

Talkin’ about all-American burger joints, Burger Circus is surely the one to be mentioned.
At Hollywood Road in Central, it is settled as a late 19th century train carriage room, serves American sandwiches and sides from lunch to late night.
An antiquated milk bar is found at the back of the diner that makes a handful selection of milkshakes, spiked shakes and cocktails from time to time.

Making it less messy, their burgers are served neatly in paper box. We sampled some classic combos such as the fairly better Circus burger slattered with a signature Circus sauce; that is basically ketchup, mayo and pickle relish, and the Wizard burger with freshly ground and griddled beef patty layered with melted Monetery Jack cheese, ranch dressing and chopped green chilies for a kick.

The burger bun is nicely toasted and fluffy in texture, but is so unsuccessfully soggy with all the juices and dressings running through the buns.

Fries are comparatively thick cut if consider McDonald’s size, whilst comes a little mushy and seasoned, good with tomato ketchup.

Contrariwise, we love the batter-fried jalapeno peppers. It is perfectly crispy, moist and flavorfully stuffed with a creamy cheese and bacon bites.

Both the milkshakes are pretty well shaken with ice cream, for which we prefer the coffee version with toffee brittles.

In general, it is not the most impressive gourmet burger and perhaps a little pricy for a combo set.

Last Christmas, I have paid my first visit to jrink to collect a Christmas Tea Box.
It is an artisanal tea cafe serving over 80 different brewed teas, hidden secretly at a stylish corner of Tai Hang.

Lately, they are collaborating with talented pastry chef from Butter Crumbs Bakery in serving a pop up tea party, that includes unlimited refill tea to pair with finger licking pastries and simple savouries.

The Spring party begins with a theme of “Pastel Colour” as an appreciation for the breezy and stressless weekend.

Mini crackers topped with smoked salmon and emmental cheese, mini meringues and flower pastel shortbread cookies, the chocolate fudge brownie is frosted with a delightful cream cheese swirl as a less heavy yet beautiful touch.

The vanilla eclair is one of my favourites. Dipped with colourful pink icing and a touch of spring, the choux pastry is made excellent in texture and filled with amazingly creamy custard where you can spot a notable among of vanilla seed.

An astonishing pavlova tower follows with layers of egg white meringue, sweetened whipped cream, berry compote and assorted berries. It is absolutely perfect because it has a chewy and soft center but a uniform crisp surface, almost resembles a big marshmallow.

To top up, we are surprised by the show stopping matcha mousse. Beautifully plated with chocolate tuile, edible flowers and thick matcha sauce, it shows a delicate balance of sweet and bitter, pronounced by good quality matcha.

Final two words, Excellent and Exclusive!

Maygori is a new kakigori dessert cafe set at the new hit spot theCOMMONS. It is an extended brand of After You Dessert Cafe, providing a small yet amazing menu of Japanese shaved ice with specific, delicate and scrumptiously flavors.
Thinks like Japanese plum, berry yogurt, yuzu and my most anticipated flavor, milo!

The milo kakigori has a thick layer of malted chocolate, milk syrup, and fluffy sponge cake at the bottom. It is like drinking a very chocolately malted milk with some more lightly whipped cream on top to become the perfect complement. Best thing to finish our brunch!

Taegeuk Dang is the oldest bakery in Seoul. To reach here, simply take subway line 3 to Dongguk University Station, and exit at no. 2, you will see Taeguek Dang right in front of you.

I’m fascinated as I enter the cafe because there are a lot of freshly made breads and cookies, from chiffon cakes, red bean bun, cake rolls to donuts and coffee churros. Some are already packaged in their old-school design.

Coming here, it is a must to try their renowned homemade Monaka ice cream. One with original milk ice cream sandwiched in a waffle, another with a layer of glutinous rice cake. The ice cream itself is especially sweet, milky, has an icy texture but wise. It tastes a little like the traditional white rabbit creamy candy in my opinion.

This place is so worth a visit for some Korean style bread and patisseries.

Marked by a boundless open kitchen with chefs and staffs cooking and working for guests, the Open Kitchen is a very welcoming bistro cafe that is part of the Simplylife restaurant group in Hong Kong. While the restaurant offers some grab-and-go likes freshly pre-made healthy salad, sandwiches and tray-baked pastries, there is also a dine-in area to serve a multiple selection of European inspired dishes.

Be seated next to the magnificent view of the Central pier, we have sampled some quality brunch dishes from them during the afternoon weekend.

First served on the table is a wooden board full of assorted rustic bread with a slab of butter. The crusty French baguette is very satisfying whereas the dark rye is soft and moist.

Complement with a daily pumpkin soup, it is however as thick as simply pumpkin puree, which is a little under seasoned too.

Nonetheless, the signature caesar salad has been generously portioned as a seamless blend of grilled chicken, crunchy romaine lettuce, few pieces of garlic croutons and the perfect soft-boiled egg.

The handmade linguine impresses much for its memorable plating and kind serving of crab meats.

Favourite is undoutedly the beer-battered orange roughy that has been deep fried excellently crispy with a moist and flaky interior. It is also great to have a fresh grapefruit juice or lime ginger ale along the side.
Surely the Open Kitchen at IFC is always ready to serve a good lunch or brunch sets.

When looking for the best coffee or best brunch place in Bangkok, Roast Coffee & Eatery is surely on top of the list. It is a popular cafe which has opened several branches including the original one at Thonglor, one at The Helix of EmQuartier mall and this at theCOMMONS with an easy-going vibe.

The newspaper menu has a whole lot of brunch and all-day dishes such as egg Benedicts, signature strawberry waffle and fluffy pancakes, burgers and sandwiches, salad and pasta. The list extends to solid coffee and specialized drinks provided by Roots, another well-known coffee shop around Bangkok.

The crab cake benedict is one of the best I have had, with lumps of crabmeat serve atop a poached egg, with the yolk runny through together with the hollandaise. It is completed with a slightly too sweet onion jam, roasted cherry tomato and asparagus.

The mashed avocado toast is a generous serving with a healthy sprinkle of pumpkin and sunflower seeds, sourdough and balsamic vinegrette salad.

We love the signature strawberry tea made with tea ice cubes, fresh strawberries and mint, as well as the soothing matcha latte.

I’m highly recommending this cafe to everyone, especially at the new eatery spot the COMMONS.

Dango Jip is a Japanese-Korean fusion cafe located off the main street of Hongdae. No doubt it is pretty hard to find, a small cozy shop serving a homey menu. Take line 6 and get off at Sangsu Subway Station exit 4, where you should see a Starbucks. Go straight about 2 blocks, turn right onto a one way street, turn left at the corner before CU convenient store. Turn right at a black coffee shop, and follow by a left turn to see Dango Jip.

Specializes in dango, aka Japanese sweet dumplings, made with rice flour and covered in different sauces varying from red bean, green tea, cherry blossom and sweet soy sauce. They are so chewy and delicious.

My favourite here is the cherry blossom shaved ice which is topped with the same cherry blossom puree, some crunch and has a sweet milk base.If you’re looking for something savoury, the cafe also offers some Japanese rice bowl including Ochazuke as well as a chicken and egg donburi rice bowl.

Good luck finding your way to this lovely cafe!

Food Wars Asia is an original web-series on Food Network.
Hosted by a Food Hero winner Debbie Wong, she is well known for her youtube channel, who runs series of cooking demonstrations, sharing new food exposure and culinary inspirations.

As this food battle returns with a new establishment in Asia, it puts Asian countries’ most famous dishes to rival against one another, such as Singaporean’s fish ball noodles, Malaysia’s Nasi Lemak, Philipino Kare Kare and Indonesian Nasi Padang.

Today, we are invited to join the “secret” Hong Kong episode that takes place at Umami Concept.
The kitchen studio is very private, spacious and interactive, which makes it a great place for food-focused gathering and events.

The showdown aims to discover some of the best in Hong Kong, a competition between traditional and modern dim sum created by Prince Restaurant (王子飯店) and Tak Lung Restaurant (得龍大飯店).

The traditional spring roll has more votes than the apple pie version as it has a very plump and crunchy filling of shrimp paste and diced water chestnut.

We are surprised by the huge steamed truffle buns that has a super fluffy bao due to the use of natural yeast “tang chong”, and the assorted mushroom stuffing is simply delicious.

Chef has also prepared a very authentic dish, directly translated as “golden coin chicken“.
It is a traditional combination of chicken liver, char siu, thinly sliced ginger and a piece of fat.

Finally, the event is rounded off with some Indonesian inspired food prepared by Umami Concepts, including Gado-gado with beetroot chips and soft boiled egg, chicken satay and curry pork belly.
