Although I am British, I love my pub grub, fish and chips, roast etc but I also crave for American, Southwestern and Louisana Creole food!

When I found out about The Diner serving American food with cool American decor, it was the place to go.

There is another similar diner nearby called Al's diner where I tried fish and chips.

Anyway, the decor and setting reminded me of this really nice American Diner called Ed's Easy Diner in the UK which had dukeboxes, black and white floor tiles and red stools.

At The Diner, it was amazing, there was a real 1958 Cadillac sofa with working tail lights surrounded by authentic 1970's license plates, working traffic lights, pedestrian lights and a vintage Coke sign.

I was so lucky to sit at the bar table because I could see all the food being made and it was nice facing Arbuthnot Road.

011B5T9F9B4CB0FDEFF7C3l.jpg

011B5IBF5769EDF4491991l.jpg

The chefs were really hygienic because they had gloves on when handling food.

011B5V97B04388130AFA79l.jpg

While I sat there, I caught a glimpse of the Hippie Burger which I shall order on my next visit.

The Hippie burger is a vegetarian beetroot and bean patty burger.

011B5OD301E29394729BEDl.jpg

Kids get special treatment because their food is served in cute little Cadillac paper cutout models.

Burgers start at $125 and they have toasted sandwiches and all day breakfasts as well.

I settled for the Mac and Cheese balls and the grilled cheese sandwich.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Mac n Cheese Balls:

America's favorite comfort food in a crispy crumb with a touch of jalapeno and a side of fresh tomato & basil sauce

011B5L9F732B585578B6A4l.jpg

This was nice and loaded with cheese and macaroni but I wish the cheese was stronger and less of the jalapeno because the jalapeno taste was too prominent and spicy for me.

I would have also preferred normal macaroni and not the ribbed one.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Grilled Cheese:

Cheddar and bourbon bacon jam melted in griddled sourdough

011B5M4B68F64F003979D9l.jpg

This was delicious because the bacon jam was sweet but again I would liked more cheese.

A few days later, it was reported on the paper that this place is actually opened by a Brit!

Way to go Marcus Thomson and that really nice Chef Seb!!!!

Found out about this new burger called the RED PERI SCORCHERfrom the paper.

Only noticed it because of the colourful stars which is quite similar to my openrice logo.

00W9WHA5EA88EE256BE724l.jpg

00W9WI5A8A5833FBABE539l.jpg

The red peri scorcher burger is NEW in HONG KONG but has already been launched in Singapore and Australia last year.

00W9W81BDA80A7C82E2DB2l.jpg

Made with Carolina Reaper chilis, habanero chilis, Naga Jolokia chilis and Peri Peri chilis.

The world's hottest chilis guarenteed to be a scorching sensation.

00W9WF8D547A9694ED0AFEl.jpg

00W9WG55C282D55009BEB5l.jpg

I really liked it because it was crispy marinated chicken thigh meat with cracker wheat and the sauce was spicy with a strong hint of lemon.

It had a really nice cajun smell just like the coating you find in Southern fried chicken.

The chili was fiery but it does not linger which is why I like African chilis.

Sunny Boulangerie et Patisserie (Jordan)

Sunny Boulangerie et Patisserie looks promising from the outside but when you go in, the cakes and breads are Chinese style.

There are other branches in Hong Kong but this is the only branch that has a cafe area serving teas and coffees.

00XDBWBBA6EE6D8E7AFBA8m.jpg

00XDBX301BEB2D313814D5m.jpg

I was attracted by the orange cream carrot cake which cost $32, when it was brought over, it was three slices!!

I thought $32 was per slice/piece as the label says because in the cabinet, it was already sliced into three slices, so per piece meaning one of those slices.

Anyway, the cake looked quite genuine with lots of carrots in it.

00XDBV03120B1A8C902CB2m.jpg

However it was dry and hard. God knows how long it has been in the cabinet.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Numi Aged Earl Grey $13:

The organic tea was only $13 per cup. How cheap!!

00XDBS0A7B56B519D9B8E7m.jpg

00XDBT7F592D597A10DEDDm.jpg

Unfortunately, the cup containing hot tea gave off toxic plastic fumes which made the tea undrinkable.

I did not drink the tea sad.gif

Seriously, these cups should be checked or confiscated by the health department or whatever department is responsible.

Halloween is drawing closer so I had the Halloween set which costs a devilish $666 that includes chicken wings, garlic bread, four non alcoholic drinks, ONE Halloween pizza, pasta and a dessert.

015LOZ0B2DA7470A03D025l.jpg

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

There are three different Halloween pizzas: Ghost house pizza, Spider web and spooky eyes!!

Ghost house pizza :

015LOV0C829A4BC2462166l.jpg

The ghost pizza was the simplest but most delicious because it had 'Nduja' which is a spicy, spreadable pork sausage from Italy.

It was a salty and meaty chili sauce which really gave life to a dead pizza that had so many ghosts on it!!

Spider web:

The spider web has ham, olives and mushrooms

015LOW12485CDC6B539F96l.jpg

015LOXCCD640A4AD83C9D6l.jpg

Spooky eyes:

015LOYF1ECD841831FCD25l.jpg

The spooky eyes has salami, olives and mascarpone on a charcoal dough pizza.

I liked this one because of the creamy mascarpone and smoked salami.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Torture:

015LOU91BC7561059C8364l.jpg

A plate of torture!!!

Delicious al-dente pasta with a thneringer sausage and pieces of bacon.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Dessert:

The Halloween feast was finished with a burning dessert, crisp pizza slices paired with icecream.

I used to think Kee Wah Bakery sold just mooncakes, Chinese Bakery and Preserved sausages but it was more modern than I thought.

As well as Chinese tea leaves they also have festive products for Christmas.
They have launched a Christmas Box set for $135.

There are three tins.

The decor of this branch has some Japanese twist to it with solitary tables and privacy.

I liked the solitary cubicles and seats by the wall that have a comfortable leg rest too and an upside down plastic plant dangling from above.

Naked Gurume Gyarari sounded like a taboo at first!!

00XC8U3B281D46CB79FF7Cm.jpg

When I heard the name I thought it was going to be wildly exotic with topless sexy male models serving food!

However, when I got there, the entrance leading to the restaurant was quite mysterious because it was plain black and white.

Naked Gurume Gyarari combines art with gourmet food and they have an exhibition room next door.

00XC8VD44BB7EA27D07030m.jpg

Here was what we tried.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Black truffle lotus roots chips:

00XC8O131175D44BBC25EAm.jpg

Delicious crispy lotus root slices that came with a lovely dip with Yuzu garlic cream and black truffle paste.

I couldn't quite taste the Yuzu but the truffle was nice and strong.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Hotate with jewel leaves:

00XC8P65A15445FF76FDFFm.jpg

Diver scallops, mixed mesclan, crispy bacon bits, tofu cheese vinaigrette.

I loved this dish because it had my favourite jewel leaves which are crisp and sweet paired with the fresh tasting scallops.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Lobster risotto bisque:

00XC8Q62D2C4328B0225BDm.jpg

Smoked turkey cognac reduction, parsley lime risotto, croutons, lobster bisque.

The soup was nice and filling with a substantial amount of risotto, however the saltiness could have been toned down.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Tuna tartar:

00XC8RF8337F7204A8EA21m.jpg

Poached quail egg, big eye tuna, cucumber, ginger cilantro truffle oil served on a Crispy wonton wrap.

Delicious minced tartar packed with flavours from the ginger and truffle topped with a perfectly runny quail egg.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Toro y 48 months Iberico ham wrap:

00XC8SD89B63CA6287FAD3m.jpg

Tuna belly, 48 months Iberico cured ham, seagrapes, negi, mixed quinoa and Shiso cress.

The tuna belly was quite similar to the tuna tartar above but it was refreshed by the juicy seagrapes and flavoured by the Iberico ham while the crunch of the Quinoa balanced out the oiliness.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Fiddlehead fern and shimeji mushrooms (to be launched):

00XC8TE1964F51958B4065m.jpg

Again another one of my favourites because fiddlehead fern is crisp and sweet, similar to spinach.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Foie gras with guava sorbet:

00XC8N403F1994EA412C5Dm.jpg

The foie gras was paired well with blueberries which took away the greasy feeling and the guava sorbet helped to refresh the palette for the main course.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Uni and quinoa pasta:

00XC8MCBCA9B18E70F3945m.jpg

sea urchin, mixed quinoa, bacon loin, cherry tomato, garlic cream, parmesan and linguine.

The pasta was quite creamy and heavy but the crunchy quinoa helped to balance it out.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Braised tako and bone marrow pasta:

00XC8LB4BA4E78FF741CCEm.jpg

Octopus, bone marrow, tomato, cilantro, quinoa, kombu, bonito and linguine.

The linguine was really tasty in tomato and herb sauce with slices of braised octopus.

On top of the linguine there were two slices of bone marrow which added to the silkiness of the linguine.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Blueberry sushi:

00XC8K07C9C554BDDC9088m.jpg

Star anise, Japanese black sugar, muscovaso and pistachio.

The blueberry sushi was fun and creative, it was sponge cake wrapped with thin slices of cucumber which replaces the seaweed.

The taste was surprisingly nice because the cucumber slices and cake were refreshing.

The sauce had some agar in it which made it interestingly viscous

To coincide with the Disney film Frozen, Maxim's have launched a series of cakes and desserts.

I tried the desserts which were beautifully designed like a crystal ball that cost $42 each.

1375861_709904135791263_6771685371734450
This was the most creative dessert I have seen so far produced by Maxims with the spoon incorporated as part of the design.

There are two flavours: Chocolate or White chocolate mousse.

1505419_709904175791259_2903130178827649

The white chocolate mousse has white chocolate flakes and marshmallows on top. It was not as sweet as I anticipated and I was delighted to discover some strawberry slices and cake at the bottom.

8966_709904185791258_5868261642234429163
The other one was chocolate mousse which was thick and silky topped with chocolate and marshmallows on top.

10389414_709903989124611_174141331845073
After finishing the dessert and cleaning it out, you are left with a pretty crystal ball!

Found out that there was a new Banana and chocolate drink so tried it.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Banana chocolate:

00W9BE1D746B2BAB6522CDm.jpg

00W9BD0AE46F3567284808m.jpg

On first sip, it was too sweet!

There was a nice banana smell and the chocolate did not have a sour aftertaste, but the main problem was that the drink was too sweet.

Mother's Day in Hong Kong is approaching fast.

DSC_5807.jpg
Maxim's have launched a good choice of cakes for the big day.

My favourite is the Diamond Box which is a strawberry cake with a beautiful box and a white chocolate shaped diamond on top with flowers beside it.

DSC_5766.jpg
The next on the list in terms of taste and appearance is the Flower Cake and the Sunflower Black forest.

I like the flower on the cross section when you slice the Flower Cake and the Black forest is always a popular flavour.

DSC_5802.jpg

Then there is the sweet Macaron Tower or the Flower rainbow cake to choose from.
DSC_5804.jpg

For mango lovers, there is the Sunflower mango crispy or the Rose blossom for rose lovers.
DSC_5803.jpg

If all those choices were not enough, there are also two more fruity and summery cakes for energetic mums:
DSC_5805.jpg

For down to earth mums, there are Chiffon cakes and for mums with green fingers they will love the Tiramisu Garden!!

I was given this XO sauce ages ago at the "OR be my guest event" but forgot about it.

Found it when I was tidying my desk, so decided to get some Stir fried soy sauce noodles to go with it.

The XO sauce came in a pretty Chinese silk bag.

00W9C3670B6B3E29422B92m.jpg

The amount in the jar was just right and I used it all in one go.

00W9BN8982D9B28C0745D3m.jpg

Strangely the sauce tasted really nice and there were lots of dried scallops and prawn roe in it which was different to when I tried it at tasting.

The taste was great, it was not too spicy and prawn roe smell was strong.

Each juice has a different nourishing property.

I chose the SKIN which had pineapple, apple, avocado and romaine lettuce.

011XTMDB41D27FFC36B122l.jpg

The bill was only $2 Thanks to Ivy because she bought a package of prepaid coupons so if you choose something that costs more then you pay the difference.

011XTL42678BB2D39B5BC7l.jpg

011XTQD913D16F9863D1F4l.jpg

I adored this drink because it was lovely and thick, the juices did not separate and held together all the way through.

As for the taste, the avocado was really prominent which was why I liked it with faint notes of apple and pineapple that balanced out the creamy and heaviness of the avocado.

Overall I was impressed by the drink and their enthusiasm.

Beer jelly:

Surprisingly, it actually had beer in it so they should warn people that it contains alcohol or 18+.

The foam layer on the top which I thought was going to taste sweet was not sweet!

It was whipped egg white and gelatin with a strong beer taste!!

Then beneath that layer was a beer jelly which had a strong beer taste with a hint of sweetness.

The Free Range BBQ Roasted Turkey menu is available now priced at HKD1,680 to be booked in advanced.

It is served in three ways which makes it special.

The Whole BBQ Roasted Free Range Turkey, which will be carved at the tableside served with pancakes and three homemade sauces: a plum & lemon, fresh garlic and Chef Fung’s secret turkey sauce.

DSC_1609.jpg
DSC_1604.jpg

The second style Turkey salad is a combination of papaya, dragon fruit, melon, scallion, red pepper, cashew nuts and a sweet peanut sauce to be mixed at the table.
DSC_1628.jpg

The last style is Minced Turkey served with Water Chestnut, Mushroom and Bamboo shoots to be eaten on a fresh, crisp lettuce cup.
DSC_1634.jpg
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
My favourite was the Turkey served in Peking style because I love the pancakes and sauce and it gives you a new eating experience.
DSC_1625.jpg
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
The turkey salad was refreshing and it reminded me of Bang Bang chicken.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
For non red meat lovers like me, the minced turkey was ideal because Turkey tastes so much better stir fried with the finely chopped water chestnuts, mushrooms and bamboo shoots.
DSC_1643.jpg
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
To finish off, we had icecream which was another mind boggling experience! SOY SAUCE icecream.
The taste was similar to salted caramel icecream!

In the past, I have only tried Western dishes at the Neptune Restaurant.
Now they have a new Spring 6 course tasting menu designed by chef K.K.Chan available from now until the end of June, featuring sustainable seafood and quality ingredients.

IMG_20180311_145610.jpg
Started with the Four Colour Platter with refreshing “Crabmeat and Avocado Salad”, “Pan Seared Scallop with Yakiniku Sauce”, “Smoked Duck Egg”, and “Sliced Spicy Abalone”.
It was a great start with different flavours to please the palate.
IMG_20180312_002934_956.jpg
Next was the “Stir-Fried Thai Tiger Prawn with Onion” which is inspired by flavours of Beijing and Huaiyang.
It was sweet and spicy with a garlicky aftertaste.
IMG_20180312_002626_975.jpg
The “Double Boiled Silky Fowl Consommé with Arisaema Tubes Fungus, Morel, Bamboo Fungus and Peach Gum” was a really light soup with strong unami flavours from the mushrooms.
One bowl isn't enough.
IMG_20180312_002432_596.jpg
For the mains, “Seabass and Italian Prosciutto wrapped Asparagus on Steamed Egg White and Supreme Pumpkin Soup” .
The egg white base was seriously silky flavoured by the rich pumpkin soup and the seabass and prosciutto were a great pairing.
IMG_20180312_002545_194.jpg
The meaty mains were “Roasted Kagoshima BBQ Pork & Tea-Smoked French Spring Chicken.
It was the best of both worlds with chicken and pork.
IMG_20180312_002338_563.jpg
Finished with the dessert platter of “Raspberry Panna Cotta”, “Deep-Fried Sesame Dumpling with Custard”, and the “Manchurian sweetmeat Glutinous Rice Flour Roll with Red Bean Paste”.
The sesame dumpling was evilicious as it was filled wtih liquid custard while the raspberry panna cotta was refreshing.

This cake shop which was opened in December last year is finally listed on OpenRice.

It is hidden in the old lanes of Sai Kung.

00XFUT9D67DDCEC5A16BA1m.jpg

The shop has a nice dreamy name called FERRIS WHEEL and the logo makes you think of macarons because of the circles around it.

It also reminds me of Ferrero Rocher because of the colour!

00XFUU728DA59936754819m.jpg

There is a cute Ferris Wheel display.

00XFUV7EF0B17EB97DCABCm.jpg

In the middle there is a glass cabinet of cupcakes and cakes.

00XFUQ1DFC4B2C323AC32Fm.jpg

00XFUSA56B157D9DAEAEFDm.jpg

00XFUR9F56DB6DA444F4EFm.jpg

I ended up getting the Earl grey mousse and the chocolate cupcake.

Both were surprisingly good and I am so glad there is finally a decent cake shop in Sai Kung because the rest are local village style bakeries which I do not like.

00XFUWA2224B4758D6E758m.jpg

00XFUX04FE689857052671m.jpg

I was really impressed with the cake box and bag too.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

MR. EARL:

Earl grey mousse

00XFUZ061432D291C51BF2m.jpg

The icing made the mousse cake pretty but I would have liked it without because the mousse was sweet enough.

00XFV0E3658EB983B10F01m.jpg

Although the mousse looked dense and hard, it had a decent whipped texture which was airy and light.

The taste was rewarding too, it was chocolately with a strong earl grey taste.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Chocolate cupcake:

00XFUY96E4F87F1EDD0679m.jpg

The cupcake surprised me as well because the texture was soft and didn't crumble.

00XFV1C732057D2CF0C556m.jpg

It was not too sweet with a strong chocolate taste and it did not have that nasty buttery lard smell and taste that the local cakes have.

Waffle feast

After trying the chicken tikka waffle, there were so many more I wanted to try, so had it for dinner!!

00XHUSE9013F04BB520E77m.jpg

You can now sit at the counter and eat.

00XHUR8CA3CD314A4BFA43m.jpg

Again I forgot my card, so I had to get my receipts stamped.

I ordered and ate the vegetarian waffle first.

00XHUU8AE412F290DE96ECm.jpg

After I finished that I had the prawn because I didn't want it to go cold.

00XHUT02F5FF7BA6B2DF0Dm.jpg

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

The vegetarian:

The box was nicely labelled.

00XHUV62A698F888F45D6Bm.jpg

00XHUWA08157C4F5BD0EFFm.jpg

00XHUXF8BAED012E5C6CE9m.jpg

I was glad I started off with the vegetarian waffle because it was nice and light.

It was filled with tasty lentils, cauliflower, cumin seeds and spices tasting like a samosa.

This is definitely recommended for vegetarians and Indians.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Thai prawn:

00XHUYA954FBA7C4B6ED42m.jpg

00XHUZC1E6B5FD70720976m.jpg

00XHV045D73F589BBEDB25m.jpg

The prawn had a strong lemongrass taste and the sauce tasted like red curry which was not too spicy but the version I had was different to the one Rebecca_Red15 had because there were mainly potatoes in hers.

The one I had contained lots of green peppers, onions and a few pieces of prawn.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Chili con carne:

00XHV4D04D879C11F18030m.jpg

00XHV7EBD62FCA52233822m.jpg

I knew I was going to like this because of the tasty beef and kidney beans.

It was not that spicy so I could handle it.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Brussels All Day "Brekkie":

00XHV13D7F14223346B4EBm.jpg

00XHV60978B231458210F8m.jpg

This had bacon in it drizzled with maple syrup.

The mix they used for this waffle was the same as the sweet ones which has a high ratio of egg white in it. Hence the lovely light and crispy airy texture.

Surprisingly I loved it because the saltiness of the bacon and sweet syrup were delicious.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Fruit Waffle double Ice Cream Deluxe:

00XHV3868912C7AFA21A12m.jpg

I liked the way the apple filling was inside the waffle because normally it is topped with fruits and messy to eat.

00XHV5832CC3B49FD1FAA8m.jpg

It would be great if the apples were not sweetened because the icecream and white chocolate shavings were sweet.

As well as apple, I am looking forward to cherry and other fillings.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Lemon Lime drink:

00XHV247515C1B7DAD64ECm.jpg

This was a great refreshing thirst quencher because it was quite hot in the shop.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

At the moment, my favourite waffles are the chicken tikka, chili con carne, bacon waffle and the vegetarian.

I love Cali-Mex

As soon as I saw this place being done up I just couldn't wait for it to open.

The exciting thing is that there are four branches and the one at LKF is open till late.

In the UK it is usally a greasy kebab after clubbing but in Hong Kong the trend will be burritos!

I tried the first branch as soon as it opened on Wellington street.

When you go in, you are greeted with Mexican sodas and warm orange decor.

015PYW1CCED181B276083Cl.jpg

015PYR40262EDFCE25159Al.jpg

015PYX684727DD4274C3BCl.jpg

There is seating upstairs and this branch is a mirror image of the Wanchai branch where the stairs and food counters are on the other side.

015PYY08F8E290C8E04AC5l.jpg

Before you order, you can see the delicious sauces, salads and meats.

015PZ0B90B61C2F262DC46l.jpg

015PYI24F4CE3F6D7B1F40l.jpg

015PYKFB1D55FBD466C652l.jpg

015PYL3F16BF08D583AEE1l.jpg

015PZ1EA542AAA5933E4A8l.jpg

The crispy shell bowls are huge!!!

015PYZ34F93EE03CBD05D4l.jpg

015PYN93C3883998CAAA35l.jpg

015PZ2E5DFFA6B18AAE532l.jpg

There was a tray filled with avocados, a key ingredient for guacamole.

015PYM3FDF1C14E2CA76D5l.jpg

Choices are headaches because all of them are good.

First you choose your filling then you decide whether you want a taco, quesadilla, burrito bowl/burritos or the crispy shell bowl!!

I had my eye on the Spinach and Venice beach, but in the end I got the Venice beach because there were so many ingredients in it that i haven't tried such as tofu sour cream and vegan mock chicken which the other Mexican places in Hong Kong don't offer.

015PYUD5A5A8BDEFA236E7l.jpg

015PYSC5527D2FCD1C5B23l.jpg

I loved the bowls here because they are flatter than the ones at Little Burro which makes it easier to eat.

Each mouthful was tasty with rice, lettuce, tasty sauce, guacamole and salsa.

To be honest I was still hungry after the bowl!!

Luckily, I shared a chicken quesadilla with someone and that was amazing, I loved the melted cheese in between with the chicken, sour cream and guacamole.

The quesadilla was soft and crispy.

015PYVBA3A86B1B454DDB9l.jpg

015PYT6885F9DF2A32D704l.jpg

After I finished, I sampled the fillings and I must admit the chicken in ranchero sauce was so tangy with gorgeous herbs to flavour it.

They used white meat and it was tender and soft.

015PYP3CE74EA129B44967l.jpg

The pork in chipotle BBQ sauce was nice and smokey and the pork was fresh.

015PYQ27D1BECF70F9BE68l.jpg

Both tasted strong which go well in tacos and burritos.

Every year Thanksgiving is getting better because more restaurants are serving turkey.

A few years ago it was really scarce that I had to keep an eye on the calender so I wouldn't miss it.

At Blue Butcher, they are now serving a whole turkey which is enough for 6-8 people priced at $1860 or half a turkey for $930 with homemade stuffing, mash, candied bacon, Brussel sprouts and trimmings.

Dessert is finished with a scrumptious pumpkin pie.

(All turkeys must be ordered 72 hours in advance.)

That night we had Turkey and some of their other dishes so lets start with the Turkey first.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Green Goddess:

10801628_708590845922592_175837282100235

Started off with this drink which was a concoction of cucumber, dill, Vanilla gum and citrus.

The taste of dill in the drink was surprisingly good and it was such a healthy drink.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Roast Turkey:

10394049_708591395922537_322368122139746

1381433_708591419255868_2810094336294620

Now to the star of the show, the turkey was sliced surrounded by the vegetables, stuffing, mash etc.

I tried both the breast and leg which were both incredibly soft and supple but I have to admit the leg was tastier.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Pumpkin pie:
10731188_708591499255860_289939710273775

The Thanksgiving meal ended with my favourite pumpkin pie which was not too sweet with a strong cinnamon flavour to it.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Other dishes we had:
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★

Kurobua BBQ pulled pork sliders:

10404337_708591185922558_363539638723285

These sliders were packed with pickled chili and aged cheddar which had a tangy smokey taste.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Veal sweetbread nuggets:
10491089_708591009255909_412609429157833

The nuggets came with black truffle emulsion and lemon.
You don't often see sweetbread on the menu so this was a must order item because it is delicious.

They are similar to chicken liver which has a soft mushy yet velvety texture and with the crispy coating they taste a bit like fried pieces of chicken.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Jarred foie gras and chicken liver:
1488125_708591035922573_4904359326813181

6282_708591082589235_7443549733199418588

The pate was lovely and velvety balanced by the sharpness of the onions.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Macaroni and cheese with egg:
1979541_708591479255862_8813963322214490

This was amazing because the cheese was rich and the addition of the half cooked egg made the macaroni tastier.
★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★
Pig belly and cheek:
10406609_708591369255873_794097579695481

The pig belly was on a bed of lentils and Granny Smith apple slaw.
It was a nice mix of pork, starchy lentils and tangy apple pieces.

Before trying this 8 course meal, I thought Jean-Paul Hévin just did high teas and chocolates.

Each course had an element of chocolate in it.

The Eight course “Chocolate Tasting Journey” costs HK$380 and the 5-course “Initiation Menu” is priced at HK$250 served 11:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily which makes it an extra option for lunch in Central.

Here were the eight courses that I had:

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆

Cream of Peas and Mint, Cream Foam, and Cocoa Powder:

01K9MD60C6950BB998AD25l.jpg

When this is served, they sprinkle the cocao powder in front of you.

It was a cooling pea and mint soup to start, perfect on a hot day.

The taste of delicate peas and mint went nicely with the chocolate smoothed out by the cream.

Beneath the glass, there are flowers to garnish which I took a picture for fun.

01K9MC851C9C3571D9008Bl.jpg

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆

Pan-seared Scallop with Ivory Chocolate Butter:

01K9MBD69EB5545370C741l.jpg

01K9MACE192C8EBC9A4367l.jpg

This was a lovely scallop on top of sweet white chocolate butter.

The sugary sweetness of the chocolate went surprisingly well with the seared scallop.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆

Pan-fried Foie Gras with 75% Chocolate and Cocoa Bean:

01K9MEC2CF56CF2C28BCEFl.jpg

01K9MHE0B3783DFCE0B281l.jpg

I loved the contrast of the soft silky foie gras against the crispy crunch of the cocoa beans which gave it a lovely bitter nutty balance to it.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆

Warm Green Asparagus, Hazelnut Oil Vinaigrette with Grated Domingo Chocolate:

01K9MFE06868E5B76D9ED2l.jpg

01K9MG0B7869FC67B140E8l.jpg

They grate chocolate onto the asparagus which melts into fine tiny droplets.

The asparagus had a lovely nutty taste which was magnified by the hazelnut oil with hints of sweetness from the chocolate.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆

Roasted Cod Filet with Black Olive Crust, Saffron and extra-bitter Dark Chocolate Sauce:

01K9MIC3887DC6C903427Bl.jpg

The cod was beautifully done, it was flakey and moist flavoured by the crisp black olive crust which gave it a lovely aromatic saltiness balanced by the sweet tender spinach leaves.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆

Chicken Fillet with Ceps and Chocolate Praline:

01K9MJ99516B04A7DF8717l.jpg

This was the last savoury dish with a tender Chicken Fillet, crunchy Chocolate Praline and silky mash.

The silky mash and chicken were just divine.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆

Petits Fours:

01K9ML97DB7AAFCCEA1817l.jpg

Finished off with Petits Fours.

On the plate was a raspberry macaron and two square tablets.

01K9MK25FFF6F5962A3BE3l.jpg

Jean Paul Hévin’s signature Le Parisien Hot Chocolate.

01K9MM0CEB735C39F998C7l.jpg

This was definitely a sweet ending with JPH delights especially the hot chocolate that was rich with a strong cocoa taste.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆

As well as the eight course, they also have lighter set lunches priced from HK$148 – HK$188 per person which includes a soup and salad starter, a main course of pasta, meat or seafood, finished with Jean-Paul Hévin’s Gâteau du Voyage Chocolate Cake Slice.

Le Parisien Hot Chocolate, coffee, or tea will be paired with the lunch set.

Since Shortbread Teas closed, I haven't had a decent meal or tea.

01ORN70073187C3421AE13l.jpg

Recently discovered The Cabin and got my comfort food!

Within two weeks I was back for the tea.

There were two menus when I got there, the Classic English Afternoon Tea Set and the afternoon tea sets.

01ORN64F36DBC470D7EBF4l.jpg

It was such a headache deciding because the tea sets had filet o fish burger and chips, pies and the other Classic English tea set was irresistible.

In the end I went for the Classic English tea set because I am going to come back for the other options.

01ORN29716565F15C26EBEl.jpg

There were three tiers and it had all the things I could possibly want which is too good to be true and I seriously mean it because other places put crap together and half of the items are not really English or too sweet.

**On the top tier, there was my favourite TRIFLES and lovely homemade tarts including the tartlet base.

01ORN86463E0867440C2F8l.jpg

**Then the second tier had cheese scones and cranberry scones with jam and CLOTTED CREAM!

01ORN49154515470280792l.jpg

01ORN3073E7C03DC29CCBFl.jpg

**The bottom tier had sandwiches, the highlight was the roast beef with horseradish and crackers with PORTOBELLO mushrooms and not cheap local mushrooms!

01ORN5938925110C4891A0l.jpg

I had a pot of Earl Grey tea because you just have to have tea!

01ORN9CC117F1A073261CDl.jpg

Started with the bottom tier first and had the salmon and tomato cherry sandwiches which were lovely, then I moved on to the toasted prawn and crab sandwiches which were creamy and delicous.

The beef and horseradish baguette slice which was the star because it was a tasty slice of beef covered in creamy horseradish sauce.

01ORNA3102DCDCC600D5FBl.jpg

Finished with the crackers which were aromatic because the truffle and portobello mushrooms were earthy and fragrant.

After finishing the bottom tier, I moved onto the scones!

I love scones and they were crumbly and delicious with the clotted cream and jam.

The cheese could have been cheesier.

After scoffing the scones, it was the sweet tier!

I loved the tartlets because their homemade tartlet base is just right, not too hard or sweet.

There was a blueberry tart and a lemon tart. The lemon tart was my favourite because it had a really thin slice of apple which gave it a lovely crisp texture and a subtle apple tone with the lemon.

The banoffee pie was lovely because the toffee taste is prominent and I love the crisp chewy base with fresh bananas and cream on top.

I saved the trifle last because it was my favourite, the trifle had lovely layers of custard, sponge, strawberry and jelly at the bottom.

COMING BACK SOON FOR MORE COMFORT FOOD!

At Gaia Ristorante, they are now serving Al Fresco Afternoon Tea from 3:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. everyday which costs HKD$198 and includes an item from the afternoon snack menu with a choice of house wine, cocktails, mocktails and soft drinks.

The location couldn’t be better in the heart of Central where everyone passes by so their food has to be top notch to stay there.

01KCAA93FF32FB371D7362l.jpg

01KCAD6B9BE385BE6C29C6l.jpg

Most evenings that I walk past, it is always crowded with people having drinks.

The afternoon menu was quite good because they have roman style pizzas which is fit for two people.

For lucky people who get off work at 5:30, the afternoon tea is perfect for early dinner.

The inside of the restaurant is nice as well as the alfresco area outside.

01KCA982D0DD97427D6646l.jpg

Here is what we had:

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆

Pina colada:

01KCAM4D3F3009DED15289l.jpg

Started off with this cooling pina colada which was not too sweet with a balanced coconut and pineapple taste.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆

Spritz:

01KCAN9B88EB1A7D7933E5l.jpg

01KCAQA24B672292959CEDl.jpg

01KCAKECD39661DAE8C6AAl.jpg

We also had the Spritz which is an Italian cocktail made of prosecco and a bitter.

This had a nice orange taste to it.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆

Calamari fritti:

01KCASD6C9A4C1A28511F9l.jpg

This was delicately fried calamari served with three different mayonnaises: aioli, chili and squid ink.

The squid ink mayonnaise was the best.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆

Pizza Margherita:

01KCAG32ACEA922982749Fl.jpg

01KCAF6FC3F6EC25BF526Fl.jpg

This was a very thin pizza topped with mozzarella, basil leaves and tomato.

The pizza was big enough for two.

★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆★☆

For Maggio:

There were lots of things on this platter:

olives, walnut, sweet fig bread and mustard fruit.

01KCAIC49967002D0F9E9El.jpg

01KCARF3A252A279DAD6D7l.jpg

Mustard fruit is candied fruit which is sweet and great with cheeses.

01KCAJE46764666B02EA7Cl.jpg

On the cheese platter was saffron cheese, pecorino, goats cheese, tomino and talegio.

My favourite was the tomino and pecorino because they were flavourful.

The fig bread was really nice and soft with lots of fig in it.

There used to be this famous croissanterie which sold filled croissants called Le Salon Restaurant et Croissanterie.

Compared with Urban bakery, you either liked Le Salon or Urban bakery.

For me, I liked Le Salon because it was less buttery but Hong Kongers for some weird reason like Urban bakery because they like that sick buttery taste.

Anyway, I was on my way to the MTR when I saw this bright shop with posters of croissants filled with a green molten filling 流心, the new hype in Hong Kong.

20151123_220456.jpg

20151123_220204.jpg
20151123_220156.jpg

20151123_220159.jpg
I wasn't keen at first because I thought they were going to be localized sickly croissants but anyway went in and they had Spinach Quiche which gives you reassurance that it is not that Chinese.

20151123_220245.jpg

20151123_220220.jpg

Unfortunately, the green pistachio filled croissant was sold out but they still had the hazelnut so I got that.

The croissant was really impressive because it was not that buttery or oily and when I ate it, the taste was amazing, the hazelnut paste was decent, it was made of real grounded hazelnuts and there was quite a fair amount of grounded hazelnuts in it.

The hazelnut filling tasted really natural as well and it was not even creamy which was fantastic.

I am so glad I stumbled upon this bakery because the standard is a bit like La salon Restaurant et Croissanterie but they have caught the molten filling hype and called them 流心牛油酥.

Can't wait to try the pistachio one next time!
