Renault – Captur

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome back :) I can’t describe how much it means to me! I’m trying to do one blog post a week and eventually get back to posting 2-3 times a week, but please be patient with me! Got some bad news that my new manager is leaving and moving on soon…which is really sad because I only just started in the team. However, I am so happy for him to be spending more time with his young children and the next stage of his career.

If you follow me on Instagram you will know, I have been very spoilt by Renault Australia and Soda Communications this year. Every time they have an event we will always be picked up by a Chauffeur in a Renault car, it started from the launch party this year for the new Renault Captur (SUV – Sports Utility Vehicle). The next event was high tea at Fancy Nance with Adriano Zumbo and recently I was also then given the car for 2 weeks to test drive (separate blog post to come about this :)

However, the event that I enjoyed the most would be the ‘Create Your Own Perfume’ held at the hidden but gorgeous Mon Bijiou on Flinders Lane. The day started at around 9:20am when our lovely driver picked us up in a Ivory White and Diamond Black Captur, I’ve been in this car many times and it always surprises me how spacious it is both in the front and back. We then arrived at the venue at around 10am and all settled in with a glass of champagne in hand and took time to enjoy the great scenery Melbourne has to offer.

Once all the guests had arrived, we sat down in our seats and was introduced to Emma the owner and perfumer of Fleurage based in Williamstown. She explained to use how we were going to create our own personal scent and that perfumes consist of a base, heart and top notes. Which made sense because when I spray perfume, I can smell the different layers of scents. It was very interesting the first thing we were asked to do was to fill out a short questionnaire and Emma would then give us indication of what colour of scents we should focus on smelling. For instance, one of the question was which season do you like the most and I chose Spring because I’ve always like floral sweet scents and rest assure I was asked to smell and focus on the scents in the ‘pink’ section. While Mr Bao (yes I dragged him along with me :P) much prefers Autumn and one of his favourite food is sushi…he was asked to focus not the ‘green’ and ‘black’ which had scents like seaweed!!!

The next step was to choose 4 base notes, 7 heart notes and 2 top notes. You start from the bottom of the tray and move your way to the top. I thought it was going to be a lot harder to choose from 80 scents but I think I know myself very well, because it only took me a couple of minutes to choose everything. I chose scents like Gardenia, Jasmine, Honey Suckle, Fig and Vanilla all those sweet girly scents. While Mr Bao had a lot of trouble choosing between the woody or fresh grassy scents, he ended up with Fernwood, Sandalwood, Lime and Citrus huge contrast from mine.

So glad they had coffee beans for us to refresh our noses because honestly after a while my nose was getting desensitised and I couldn’t distinguish the different scents. That’s why I have so much respect for Emma, she didn’t have any trouble with the scents and was able to quickly formulate each and everyone of our perfumes! That’s about 20 in only 10 minutes or so.

Once we got our ‘formula’ from Emma, it’s actually quite easy to ‘make our own perfume’ we grabbed our bottles from the bag which had I believe distilled water and we started added drops of scents. You would add more droplets of those that you want to have a stronger presence in the perfume, like mine I had more drops of rose and jasmine.

He didn’t do so badly himself, but he was much more particular than me. He was counting every drop again and again and was worried he would add too many or little. It must be the scientist in him haha

Ta da!!! Here it is! My very own Never Too Sweet perfume! Staying true to my brand it’s a very sweet florally perfume with strong musk, jasmine and apple notes haha. While Mr Bao’s was very citrusy and refreshing with grass, sandalwood, lime, mint and orange.

Mr Bao was very skeptical at first when I told him we were going to a perfume making class, but he thoroughly enjoyed himself and has been using his own cologne since then. I’ve been joking once he’s used up his bottle he wont have his own signature scent anymore but not to worry because Emma offers a refilling service for $2.5 a ml which works out to be around $125 for 50mls. For more information about Creating Your Own Perfume please visit the Fleaurage website :D I think its a great idea for a birthday party or a bridal shower, I highly recommend it and would love to do it again.

Now let’s move onto the FOOD because at the end of the day I am a food blogger and eating takes precedent over every if not most things :D And don’t forget camera eats first hehe I’m glad the waitress was so patient and would come to me first with the food, because she knew I wanted to take a photo. The catering was done by Om Nom from the Adelphi Hotel which means we were in for a treat because food is always great. I still remember when we stayed at the hotel last year for my birthday and I really enjoyed the room service.

All the savoury canapés were presented so nicely with a heart shape skewer and all tasted delicious! I was impressed with how much flavour such small items had. They were also a great size not too big or small and no mess when eating them.

My favourite was definitely the soft shell crab with aioli, deep fried but not greasy. Wish I grabbed another one! I really love how soft shell crab is such a trendy food item now it appears on most menus, I remember when it use to be limited to Japanese restaurants.

As for sweets they had mini Churros with chocolate sauce and also Rapsberry sorbet with fresh berries and meringue pieces. Another smart way of serving sorbet no spoons required, as they are made into little discs very refreshing.

Lemon Trifle

My Dearest Reader’s I’m FINALLY back!!! My sincerest apologies for not posting for 3 months! That is the longest time I haven’t updated and written a blog post! I wish I had a better excuse than I’ve been busy at work…but unfortunately that is the truth. It’s taken me a while to settle into my new job, however, I’m finally comfortable and feel like I belong in my team and the company :)

Even though, I haven’t had the chance to blog, I update instagram (@daisy_nevertoosweet) so please follow me there for daily posts. I have so many new and exciting events, restaurant reviews and recipes, that I look forward to sharing with you!

Anyhow, let’s start with a super easy 5 minute cheat dessert! Honestly the easiest but most impressive dessert I’ve made :) No cooking, stirring and minimal washing. Because I’m now working longer hours and have less time to be in the kitchen, I need to find short cuts to at least make a dessert which can impress my friends when they come over. This may be a good dessert to make for any upcoming Christmas parties you may have.

Lemon Trifle1

Recipe – Cheat’s Lemon Trifle original recipe from Never Too Sweet
Yield – 2 small jars/serves

Ingredients
6 Gingernut biscuits
1 jar store bought Lemon Curd (Use about 6 tablespoons)
10 tablespoons Vanilla Yoghurt
Mint leave for garnishing2 small glass jars

Notes
– If you have time please feel free to make your own lemon curd
– You may substitute

Method
1) Place Gingernut biscuits in a ziplock bag and crush into crumbs.
2) Ensure your glass jars are dry and clean, place a thin later of cookie crumbs in the bottom of the jars.
3) Layer with 2 tablespoons of Vanilla yoghurt then layer 2 tablespoons of lemon curd.
4) Repeat until the jars are filled and finish with the lemon curd and sprinkle with some more Gingernut cookie crumbs.
5) Finally garnish with mint leave if you wish.

Rosemary's Curry ChickenToday’s recipe is sponsored by ASKO cooktops as they believe “great meals start at the cooktop”, which I completely agree. I have always been a fan of gas cooktops as I like seeing the flame and being Chinese we always talk about the ‘breathe of wok’ or what we call ‘wok hei’. Eventually when we move out of our rental and purchase our own apartment, I would like an ASKO gas cook top as it has the wok burner on the left and will not get in the way of the other burners.

Rosemary Curry Chicken I am so honoured to share with you today Rosemary’s curry chicken recipe, she is my friend Julie’s ex Mother-in-law and I honestly believe grandmother’s recipes are always the best. Rosemary originates from South Africa and she has been making this recipe for decades. It’s not quite as spicy as some Indian curries but has enough heat and the coconut cream gives so much fragrance.

It can be serve it with rice or roti bread but remember to use up all that delicious curry sauce. Perfect dinner dish for your family on a cold wintery night :) Mr Bao and I enjoyed it so much we wished there was more and we can’t wait to remake this! Recipe – Rosemary’s Curry Chicken
Yield – 
Serves approximately 4 people

Ingredients
500g chicken thighs cut into chunks
3 tbs olive oil
1 onion chopped
4 cloves of garlic chopped
2 chillies chopped
3 spring onion chopped
1 tbs Curry power (Clive of India)
1 can Coconut Cream
3-4 medium size potatoes
1/2 tsp salt

Notes
– You can used a can of diced tomato instead of coconut cream if you prefer a red based curry
– You can substitute potatoes for another vegetables such as lima or broad beans

Method
1) Heat olive oil in large pan over medium heat, add onions and cook until translucent. Add garlic, chillies and spring onion and cook for a few minutes before moving ingredients to one side of the pan and let the oil move to the other side.

Rosemary Curry Chicken I am so honoured to share with you today Rosemary’s curry chicken recipe, she is my friend Julie’s ex Mother-in-law and I honestly believe grandmother’s recipes are always the best. Rosemary originates from South Africa and she has been making this recipe for decades. It’s not quite as spicy as some Indian curries but has enough heat and the coconut cream gives so much fragrance.

It can be serve it with rice or roti bread but remember to use up all that delicious curry sauce. Perfect dinner dish for your family on a cold wintery night :) Mr Bao and I enjoyed it so much we wished there was more and we can’t wait to remake this! Recipe – Rosemary’s Curry Chicken
Yield – 
Serves approximately 4 people

Ingredients
500g chicken thighs cut into chunks
3 tbs olive oil
1 onion chopped
4 cloves of garlic chopped
2 chillies chopped
3 spring onion chopped
1 tbs Curry power (Clive of India)
1 can Coconut Cream
3-4 medium size potatoes
1/2 tsp salt

Notes
– You can used a can of diced tomato instead of coconut cream if you prefer a red based curry
– You can substitute potatoes for another vegetables such as lima or broad beans

Method

Happy Sunday! Aren’t we all glad it’s finally the weekend? :) What do you normally doing during the weekend? I love baking and being in the kitchen on weekends! Last weekend Mr Bao got very sick with gastro poor thing he was literally best friends with the toilet for 30 hours straight! So we had to cancel all our plans and stay home…which is fine I guess because it meant I got to bake these Alfajores.

When I posted these Alfajores on my Instagram and Facebook I got a lot of comments asking what they were exactly. Now for starters I wouldn’t have a clue how to pronounce ‘Alfajores’ correctly but that doesn’t matter because they are delicious! To put it simply Alfajores are South American short bread cookies with dulce de leche which is a caramel made from cooking condense milk in either a water bath in the oven or in the can in a saucepan.

I chose to make the dulce de leche in the over, because I found that to be the most authentic and easiest you just tip the condense milk into a baking dish and into baking tray filled with water and cook for 1.5 to 2 hours.

This recipe is for Julie because she’s been asking me for the recipe and what these Alfajores taste like :D Hope you will make these caramel short bread cookies soon because I promise you they will disappear in seconds!

Recipe – Alfajores (Short Bread with Dulce De Leche) adapted from Taste.com and SBS.com
Dulce De Leche
Yield – 
Approximately 500ml

Ingredients
2 x 395g sweetened condensed milk

Method
1) Preheat oven to 220°C. Pour condense milk into a baking dish. Place dish into a baking tray or roasting pan. Pour water into pan until halfway up to the side of the dish.
2) Cover dish with foil and bake for 1 hour 45 minutes or more until it turns into a dark golden colour. Check on the dulce de leche every half and hour and refill pan with water if necessary. Once it turns into a golden colour whisk mixture until smooth and glossy.

Notes
– Depending on your oven it may take longer or a shorter time to make your dulce de leche.
– Store dulce de leche in sterilised jars and in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
– Set dulce de leche aside and prepare to make shortbread cookie

300g (2 cups) plain flour, sifted
50g pure icing sugar, sifted
200g cold unsalted butter, chopped
2 egg yolks
pinch of salt
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
275g dulce de leche
50g desiccated coconut for rolling

Method
1) Process flour, icing sugar, unsalted butter and pinch of salt in a food processor until mixture resembles crumbs. Add egg yolks and vanilla extract and process again until mixtures comes together. Cover with plastic wrap and chill for 1 hour or overnight.
2) On a lightly floured surface, roll dough out to 5mm thick. Using a 6cm round cooker cutter cut out 20 discs, re-rollling pastry if necessary. Place on oven tray with baking paper and refrigerate or freeze for 30 minutes or more.
3) Preheat oven to 180°C. Bake biscuits for 15 minutes or until light golden. Transfer to a rack to cool completely. Pipe dulce de leche over half the biscuits, then sandwich with remaining biscuits. Roll in desiccated coconut and serve immediately or place in an airtight container for up to 5 days.

Notes
– Because the dough has a high butter content you need to work quickly when cutting out discs as dough can stick on rolling pin
– You can replace the desiccated coconut by sprinkling icing sugar over the biscuits

San Churros

Today’s post is a little different, of course it’s all about churros those delectable fried Spanish Donuts that San Churros specialising in making but more importantly it’s about their campaign to support beyondbluean independent non-profit organisation working to address issues associated with depression, anxiety disorders and related mental illnesses.

San Churros has launched ‘Share A Churros Week’ and from the 15th-21st of June (this week) every churros sold $1 will be donated to beyondblue. When I was asked if I would like to help promote this campaign I couldn’t have said any quicker. Unfortunately, a few people very close to me suffer from depression and anxiety, I have seen first hand how it affects them. Therefore, if there’s anything I can do to support and help the charity I will definitely do it.

I wanted to share with some facts about depression and anxiety:
– 45 per cent of people will experience a mental health condition in their lifetime
– On average, 1 in 6 people will experience depression at some stage of their lives
– Anxiety is the most common mental condition in Australia
– On average, 1 in 4 people will experience anxiety
– At least six Australians take their own lives every day

I know it’s very important for people who suffer depression and anxiety to have the support from family and friends. Therefore, it’s a great concept of ‘Share A Churros’ because I honestly believe food can bring people together and because there’s endorphins in chocolate hehe that’s why I asked a dear friend of mine Catherine from Sweet Empire to go to San Churros and have a churros feast with me.

The are quite a few San Churros outlets in Melbourne, we found the one in Westfield Knox in Wantirna to be the closest to us both. We met at the newly renovated store it is much bigger and spacious compared to the kiosk they use to have inside the shopping centre.

With plenty of seating inside and sunlight shining through it is a great place for business meeting, afternoon tea and dessert after dinner. They also have comfy black leather sofas which is where to settled down and ordered our drinks.

Azteca Chilli Spanish Hot Chocolate $5.95

I can never leave without ordering the Azteca Spanish Hot chocolate which is chilli flavoured. If you haven’t had a Spanish hot chocolate before, I am warning you now it is VERY VERY thick haha and not everyone will like it! I personally love it! It is so thick it’s more like a pudding especially when it’s a little colder and thickens up. The subtle chilli taste gives it some more heat and perfect for a cold winter night. They have other flavours for the hot chocolate which I like too such as the peanut butter!

We then ordered a Churros For Two because it’s the perfect amount churros for us. Instead of milk and dark chocolate we decided to try something different and order the white chocolate which tasted a little like condense milk and dulce de leche (which is cooked condense milk to make a caramel).

Thanks Catherine for being the hand model :) Just look at that creamy dulce de leche! I’ve had the churros so many times haha my old office use to be walking distance to San Churros so yes I was a regular. They are made to order and freshly baked, never too oily and always crispy on the outside and soft inside with cinnamon sugar sprinkled over.

I would’ve loved to invite more people, but they were all working and hey who said two can’t be a party :P We didn’t have breakfast so this made up for it, we ordered the Fondue For Two which had a great range of condiments. Firstly a big pot of melted dark chocolate that is a must for a fondue. Then for dipping you had churros (of course!), fresh strawberries, bananas, marshmallows, brownies, macarons (pistachio & NY Cheesecake), pretzels and chocolate truffles! WOW!

Just looking at this platter makes me smile and want to share it with all my friends. I swear I have collected at least 3 fondue sets over the years, but I’ve never gotten around to using them. When I really should because it is such a great idea for dinner parties and so fun to eat using these little skewers.

Beer Deluxe

My Dearest Readers, are you a beer drinker? I wouldn’t say it’s my drink of choice, but I do enjoy the occasional Corona and I’m starting to enjoy some Lagers. I was recently invited to visit Beer Deluxe in Hawthorn as the name suggests they specialise in beers and have 12 or even more on tap! It was very interesting to learn about how the beer is made underneath in restaurant.

Beer Deluxe1Heres a list of their beer that night we visited :) The tasting paddle seems like a great idea for those who want to try different kinds of beers without having to get too drunk too quickly hehe. I decided to bring Garfield with me, as Mr Bao has been very busy at work and I knew he would appreciate it more as he is definitely a beer drinker.

Brooklyn Lager $9.5

Garfield started with a Brooklyn Lager from from the US, his comment it was quite light in flavour and resembled more like an ale instead. We liked how it came with a glass with the logo printed on it.

Lick Pier Ginger Beer $9.5

I know this may sound a little ignorant, however, I always like ginger beer was only the name and it had alcohol. But I guess I’m wrong because they had two ginger beer options on the menu and both with 4% alcohol. The Lick Pier ginger beer wasn’t as hot as I thought it would be, but it still had some heat to it.

As you would expect for a restaurant which specialises in beer, they offered a great range of bar snacks. We ordered a couple to share, this is the spicy chicken wings with Sriracha hot sauce, celery sticks and ranch. It’s such a large serving, Garfield and I struggled to finish them after having 4 wings each in one go!

I think chicken wings are a great beer snack because their fun to eat with your fingers and the Sriracha sauce actually complimented the beer very well. Probably because it was so spicy and the beer helped to mellow it.

For those who remember Garfield from previous posts, he is the one who only likes 3 things – burgers, pad see ew and calamari! So there was no question that we would order the tempura battered calamari with aioli. We were both impressed at how light the batter was and the calamari stayed so tender and soft inside.

Another mush try dish was a burger, they have a decent size burger menu. We decided to choose a traditional and simple cheese burger with a beef pattie, melted cheese, lettuce, mayo and deluxe sauce. I found the pattie to be a little bland in flavour, but that was compensated by the melted cheese and the soft warm brioche bun.

Another dish that I normally order when I am at a pub is fish and chips, this was made using Lager batter and served with homemade tartare sauce. I nearly forgot how much food we ordered! Garfield made a comment that he never leaves after having dinner with me hungry haha :P I really enjoyed this fish and chips, the fish was still moist and the tartare sauce was delicious.

I was pleased to see that they had two dessert options as this is not often seen at a pub ~ They had this house made chocolate and salted caramel tart. I wasn’t sure what the green candies was on top of the tart and it turns out to be mint flavoured candy which made this more like a chocolate and mint tart. Rather refreshing and rich at the same time :)

Garfield and I had a great time and he’s already planning to bring his colleagues here for lunch or dinner sometime as he really likes the ambience and vibe. The staff was very attentive and shared with me how they make beer in a room underneath the restaurant and how the beer becomes ‘on top’ Very interesting and I would love the chance to visit their beer making room next time I visit!

I decided to bring Garfield with me, as Mr Bao has been very busy at work and I knew he would appreciate it more as he is definitely a beer drinker.

Brooklyn Lager $9.5

Garfield started with a Brooklyn Lager from from the US, his comment it was quite light in flavour and resembled more like an ale instead. We liked how it came with a glass with the logo printed on it.

Lick Pier Ginger Beer $9.5

I know this may sound a little ignorant, however, I always like ginger beer was only the name and it had alcohol. But I guess I’m wrong because they had two ginger beer options on the menu and both with 4% alcohol. The Lick Pier ginger beer wasn’t as hot as I thought it would be, but it still had some heat to it.

As you would expect for a restaurant which specialises in beer, they offered a great range of bar snacks. We ordered a couple to share, this is the spicy chicken wings with Sriracha hot sauce, celery sticks and ranch. It’s such a large serving, Garfield and I struggled to finish them after having 4 wings each in one go!

I think chicken wings are a great beer snack because their fun to eat with your fingers and the Sriracha sauce actually complimented the beer very well. Probably because it was so spicy and the beer helped to mellow it.

For those who remember Garfield from previous posts, he is the one who only likes 3 things – burgers, pad see ew and calamari! So there was no question that we would order the tempura battered calamari with aioli. We were both impressed at how light the batter was and the calamari stayed so tender and soft inside.

Another mush try dish was a burger, they have a decent size burger menu. We decided to choose a traditional and simple cheese burger with a beef pattie, melted cheese, lettuce, mayo and deluxe sauce. I found the pattie to be a little bland in flavour, but that was compensated by the melted cheese and the soft warm brioche bun.

Another dish that I normally order when I am at a pub is fish and chips, this was made using Lager batter and served with homemade tartare sauce. I nearly forgot how much food we ordered! Garfield made a comment that he never leaves after having dinner with me hungry haha :P I really enjoyed this fish and chips, the fish was still moist and the tartare sauce was delicious.

I was pleased to see that they had two dessert options as this is not often seen at a pub ~ They had this house made chocolate and salted caramel tart. I wasn’t sure what the green candies was on top of the tart and it turns out to be mint flavoured candy which made this more like a chocolate and mint tart. Rather refreshing and rich at the same time :)

Garfield and I had a great time and he’s already planning to bring his colleagues here for lunch or dinner sometime as he really likes the ambience and vibe. The staff was very attentive and shared with me how they make beer in a room underneath the restaurant and how the beer becomes ‘on top’ Very interesting and I would love the chance to visit their beer making room next time I visit!

I hope all my Dear Reader’s in Melbourne have enjoyed the Queen’s Birthday long weekend :) Mr Bao and I had a lovely weekend catching up with friends and spending time with our little puppy. As a weekend ritual we always go out for brunch and this time we ended up going to Legacy in Camberwell nice and close to home. They are owned and run by the same owners as Collective Espresso and Mob Espresso.

It was a very cold morning probably 13 or so degrees outside, but for Cupcake we still decided to sit outside and wear 4 layers of clothing plus a jacket and scarf. Now this is what I call love haha! The staff were wonderfully friendly and attentive.

Because it was so cold, I ordered something a little different, this is the chilli mocha. I’ve never heard of this combination before, it’s usually chocolate and chilli which I love and now with the addition of coffee. It was surprisingly nice and very comforting with the hint of heat from the chilli. Great combination and I hope more places will start offering this :)

Mr Bao ordered a latte which is a single origin (Sorry I forgot the country it’s from!) but it did had floral notes and quite light tasting. The latte art is also beautiful here!

We definitely eat more when it’s cold! Mr Bao needed a big and hearty brunch, he ordered the Full House with Kaiser bacon, field mushrooms, spinach, cherry vine tomatoes, potato rosti, sourdough toast and poached eggs.

We enjoyed all the ingredients and everything was cooked so well, our favourite was definitely the potato rosti that was made from grated potato. It was fried so the outside was so crispy but inside still stayed soft. You can’t see the Kasier bacon in this photo but it had great flavour without being too salty.

Another thing I can’t resist is fried chicken especially if it’s buttermilk because it means the chicken stays tender and moist. The fried chicken was placed in a brioche bun with charred corn slaw, mustard and sriracha mayo. Honestly, can’t fault this burger! The fried chicken was absolutely divine!

I forgot to share with you the amazing dessert/pastry cabinet I was staring at from the moment we got to the cafe. I’ve heard from Ash (Im So Hungree) that they make their own donuts and that I must try some! I am kicking myself for not asking the waiter to put some aside for me, as I missed out on the Salted caramel and the white chocolate and Reeses Peanut Butter cup one! Guess that just gives me another excuse to come back ~

Instead I got the filled donut with Nutella filled up to the top and covered in icing sugar, unlike some of the other donut outlets in Melbourne now. These are still fried donuts but definitely not oily with a slightly dense texture.

Surprisingly Mr Bao agreed to get another donut and he chose the Raspberry poppyseed which had a lovely deep rose colour. Raspberry flavours were strong with hints of poppy seed, a nice combination of flavours and I usually see poppyseed with orange ~

Legacy Camberwell10Another great cafe by the guys from MOB and Collective Espresso. The interior is a little more modern than the other two cafes, but food is definitely on par. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and I’m starting to get worried that it will soon be too popular for us to get a table on the weekends! :) Note to self MUST TRY White chocolate Reeses Donut!

New Shanghai

I love shopping so it’s very exciting when the Emporium opened up in Melbourne last year. It is a new shopping centre which has taken over the old Myer building connected to Melbourne Central. They have a great variety of stores but more importantly they have a very impressive food court with – Jimmy Grants, I Love Pho Express, Rice Work Shop and many more. But more importantly they have New Shanghai a new restaurant serving traditional Shanghainese dishes.

I have visited New Shanghai a couple of times and they were very kind to invite me back again for a meal :) So Mr Bao and I had a little date where we visited the Dog Lovers Show first to get some goodies for Cupcake before heading over to New Shanghai.

Xiao Long Bao - Crab & Pork $11

We arrived at a slightly odd time 4pm a little too late for lunch and too early for dinner, but that doesn’t matter because it meant the restaurant wasn’t as busy and we could take our time enjoying our meal. Don’t be too alarmed at the speed the food comes out here at New Shanghai, it feels like you have only just ordered and within a minute the food appears in front of you. I actually find it quite impressive as the dumplings are always piping hot when it arrives. We started with these Xiao Long Bao (AKA Soupy Dumplings) with a crab and pork meat filling.

New Shanghai3I actually had a lot of fun shooting these little dumplings, they’re very cute! They also taste fantastic with a very soupy filling so I suggest eating with a soup so you don’t lose all that liquid goodness. Everyone has different preference, but I like my Xiao Long Bao with a very thin skin and more soup inside. And dipped in a little bit of vinegar and ginger perfect way to eat them!

As I found the flavour of the crab a little overpowering and there is slightly less soup. While Mr Bao preferred the ones with crab meat so I guess each to their own ~

So the XLB were good, but the pork wontons blew me away! These wontons had the silkiest and soften skin (wrappers) served with peanut butter sauce, red chilli oil and some spice. It had so much flavour and just enough chilli to give it a little kick, however, not overpower the rest of the ingredients. Two thumbs up from us and highly recommend it!

Apart from dumplings we also shared some dishes, this is the sweet and sour pork in dark vinegar sauce. So think sweet, sticky and tender pork but it’s not the Hong Kong style roast pork, it is more braised in a thick sauce. Great snack to have on its own or with some rice.

There’s a lot of pork in Shanghainese dishes ~ We also ordered the highly recommended pork belly braised overnight in sweet soy sauce. It was similar to the previous sweet and sour pork, while this was more salty and the meat was very tender. Mr Bao also liked the fatty bits on the pork belly as it wasn’t too oily. Another great dish to share amongst a couple of friends.

Thought it was a good idea to order something with carbs to keep Mr Bao stomach full and even happier. We chose the deep fried crispy skin chicken with noodles and special garlic and chilli sauce. The chicken was close to being boneless which is a bonus for us because we are so lazy haha the chicken skin was so thin and crispy. The sauce also complimented the chicken and noodles very well.

I could feel my jeans tightening up but I simply couldn’t leave before I got some dessert. As a matter of fact, it’s very nice to see so many dessert options at a Chinese restaurant and some more unique dishes and not just mango jelly. This is the steamed pumpkin stick rice cake with a red bean paste filling, because the dumpling is made from rice dumpling and steamed, it had a very sticky and glutinous texture. I think it’s one you either like or not :P I love this texture, but I think it would’ve been even better if it was a taro paste filling as I like that more than red bean paste.

Last but not least was this baked pastry with a red bean paste filing, the pastry was very flakey. Again I’m not the largest fan of red bean paste so even though it was nice and sweet, I would’ve preferred maybe a custard or pumping filling instead.

We are being regulars at New Shanghai, as we love going shopping and then stopping by for a quick bite. Service is always quick but not rushed. Most importantly the soupy dumplings (XLB) and pork wontons are made so well! It is also very reasonably priced, Mr Bao and I properly spend on average $20 to $25 each and we are stuffed :) So if you haven’t visited New Shanghai, I recommend you going after doing some retail therapy!

My Dearest Reader’s as you know my family lives in Hong Kong and I go back regularly, and every time I go back I will get Hong Kong style egg waffles. It’s actually getting harder to find them in Hong Kong as they’re not being sold on the street anymore. So I was quite excited when Michelle (The Bakeanista)  told me a new Asian inspired cafe Baba Sus was serving these egg waffles.

Baba Sus is one of those hidden cafes that you would not have found if unless you were specifically looking for them. However, it is actually very close to Burwood Train station and is adjacent to an apartment complex. The cafe has great ambience with cute retro chairs and wooden tables.

I actually visited Baba Sus with a friend who was visiting from Hong Kong, I’m glad she doesn’t mind coming with me because I know she’s has plenty of Egg Waffles back home. Another reason why I wanted to visit was because of their matcha (Japanese Green Tea) latte. It has great colour and also latte art which I have heard is hard to make on a matcha latte. Even though it wasn’t very strong it was made well especially with a teaspoon of sugar to bring out the flavour :)

My friend ordered a cappuccino and we were so surprised to see a teddy bear face! It’s so cute that we didn’t even want to drink and ruin the latte art! Very impressive ~ I will even come back just for this cute face hehe

We ordered two dishes to share, the first was this Japanese Chicken Caesar with sweet soy chicken (teriyaki) cos lettuce, pancetta crisp, salted ricotta, soft boil egg and gribiche sauce. I am a sucker for yolk pork shots haha so this definitely got me squealing. Although this is a really simple dish, it was the perfect light refreshing lunch dish.

We then ordered a richer dish the “Pork Luck” twice cooked pork belly, apple balsamic, vermicelli and watermelon salon topped with candied walnuts. Another great dish, the pork was very crispy on the outside, it still remained tender inside and not too stringy. I was a little skeptical about the watermelon salad at first, but it complimented the pork very well with the sweetness.

Now let’s have a look at the Hong Kong egg waffles with Vanilla custard, green tea ice-cream, berry compote and pistachio praline. Another very pretty dish with all the different colours, I also found the egg waffle to be bigger than the ones we have in Hong Kong. The texture of the waffle was softer and more dense, I really enjoyed the addition of the vanilla custard inside. But I found the green tea ice-cream to be a little bland, and perhaps would have been a better match with vanilla or salted caramel ice cream.

My Dearest Reader’s as you know my family lives in Hong Kong and I go back regularly, and every time I go back I will get Hong Kong style egg waffles. It’s actually getting harder to find them in Hong Kong as they’re not being sold on the street anymore. So I was quite excited when Michelle (The Bakeanista)  told me a new Asian inspired cafe Baba Sus was serving these egg waffles.

Baba Sus is one of those hidden cafes that you would not have found if unless you were specifically looking for them. However, it is actually very close to Burwood Train station and is adjacent to an apartment complex. The cafe has great ambience with cute retro chairs and wooden tables.

I actually visited Baba Sus with a friend who was visiting from Hong Kong, I’m glad she doesn’t mind coming with me because I know she’s has plenty of Egg Waffles back home. Another reason why I wanted to visit was because of their matcha (Japanese Green Tea) latte. It has great colour and also latte art which I have heard is hard to make on a matcha latte. Even though it wasn’t very strong it was made well especially with a teaspoon of sugar to bring out the flavour :)

My friend ordered a cappuccino and we were so surprised to see a teddy bear face! It’s so cute that we didn’t even want to drink and ruin the latte art! Very impressive ~ I will even come back just for this cute face hehe

We ordered two dishes to share, the first was this Japanese Chicken Caesar with sweet soy chicken (teriyaki) cos lettuce, pancetta crisp, salted ricotta, soft boil egg and gribiche sauce. I am a sucker for yolk pork shots haha so this definitely got me squealing. Although this is a really simple dish, it was the perfect light refreshing lunch dish.

We then ordered a richer dish the “Pork Luck” twice cooked pork belly, apple balsamic, vermicelli and watermelon salon topped with candied walnuts. Another great dish, the pork was very crispy on the outside, it still remained tender inside and not too stringy. I was a little skeptical about the watermelon salad at first, but it complimented the pork very well with the sweetness.

Now let’s have a look at the Hong Kong egg waffles with Vanilla custard, green tea ice-cream, berry compote and pistachio praline. Another very pretty dish with all the different colours, I also found the egg waffle to be bigger than the ones we have in Hong Kong. Scones

 

I randomly made these scones a couple of weeks ago and couldn’t believe how many people liked the scones and asked if I could blog the recipe :) Such nice encouragement so here is it everyone! It’s a recipe I’ve been using for a while now, I find this recipe to be one of the easiest to make and you will have most of the ingredients at home.

Scones1The only part I don’t like about making scones is rubbing the butter into the flour because I have long nails, and the mixture always get stuck. The dough can also be a little sticky when rolling and cutting it out, but trust me it’s worth it! Anyhow, please try and let me know how your scones turn out :D

Recipe – Scones adapted from Taste.com
Yield – 12-14 scones depending on size

Ingredients
3 cups (450g) self-raising flour
1 tablespoon caster sugar
Pinch of salt
50g unsalted butter, chopped
1 1/4 cup (310ml) milk
Extra milk to glaze

To Serve
Raspberry jam
Whipped cream

Method
1) Preheat oven to 220°C (fan forced) and line tray with baking paper. Sift self raising flour, sugar and salt into a bowl. Add butter and use your fingertips to rub the butter into the flour until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. Make a well in the centre of the mixture.
2) Pour milk into the well and use a butter knife in a cutting action to stir and combine until it is just combined and becomes a soft but sticky dough (Add more flour or milk if too dry or too wet).
3) Gently knead dough on floured surface using your fingers or a rolling pin pat the dough into a 2cm thick disc.
4) Using a scone cutter (5cm diameter round cutter) dipped into flour and cut into scones. Place scones onto tray making sure they stick together. To glaze gently brush scone with some milk.
5) Bake scones on the top shelf of the oven for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown and scones sound hollow when gently tapped. Place scones into a clean tea towel and serve warm with jam and cream.

I first noticed Easey’s on Easey Street in Collingwood a few weeks ago when I attend an event nearby. I looked up and noticed 3 trains on a rooftop of a 5 storey building, I could see a couple of people inside and some lights. I thought it was one of those party venues, hired out for private functions such as a 21st birthday. But it turns out to be Easey’s which servers burgers, fries and drinks. Pretty cool if you ask me :) It was quite dark so unfortunately, I didn’t get a photo, but next time I go I promise to take a photo and update for you guys to have a look!

The decor is very hip with graffiti all over the walls, and I was quite impressed that they had lifts that went from the ground floor all the way up to the train carriages, even though each floor was quite small. I highly recommend making a booking online or calling them, as it was absolutely full when we arrived at 6:35 for our 7pm booking and still had to wait for the table to clear.

Because I was bored I decided to take a ‘backfie’ photo of Garfield’s back since he didn’t want to be in any of my blog photos. Our other friend Dyring was buying a drink so he missed this ‘backfie’ shot :P

We were really hoping to be seated in one of the three carriages, however, they were all full so we headed down to level two one of their dining rooms. I really liked how the tables also had map of train lines in Melbourne. The soft drinks are $4 with unlimited refills or you can add a meal with chips and soft drink when you order a burger.

I think with 5 patties haha we had enough beef so I decided to go for the Changaz Sanga which is a chicken burger with Easey’s fried chicken, bacon, American Cheddar, lettuce and mayo. It may not seem like a very big burger, but I honestly had trouble finishing it all! I think all the flavours in the burger was great just found the fried chicken to be a little bland.

These look like regular chips but trust me these were one of the highlights of the night especially with that chipotle mayo!!! Garfield couldn’t stop eating them, I was so close to ordering another serve!

I’ve heard of pop tarts and I’m sure I’ve had it before, but I have never had deep fried chocolate ones and I dare say it has CHANGED my life!!! I wasn’t expecting it to be this good before trying :) The crunchy texture on the outside reminded me of a donut but the pop tart centre was soft and oozy like a fondant!

Look at the close up of the pop tart! I simply can’t explain how delightful it was to eat and I honestly can’t wait to come back for more and think I’m going to buy a toaster just so I can eat pop tarts at home haha

I insisted that we order the donut (I eventually took it home and shared it with Mr Bao haha) even though we were so full. It was a donut with milkshake flavoured custard and surprisingly it is green in colour, it was like a malt (Milk/Horlick) flavoured custard, even though it was slightly cold when I ate it at home. It wasn’t the least oily or greasy! Wish they had more flavours for me to try :D

We all had a great time at Easey’s and think it’s a great space and has a lovely casual vibe to it. Perfect for a night out with mates, it is also very reasonably priced. Service was a little slow that night, that I can understand as they have only been open a couple of weeks and were already packed, so book online before you go :) And don’t forget to try the deep fried pop tarts!!!

Happy Sunday my Dearest Readers :) For those of us in Melbourne, I’m sure you can feel how cold it has been! But it’s not even June yet, I thought it was Autumn and we were going to ensure some nice chilly but still sunny days. And when it’s so cold, I have great difficulty waking up in the morning and that’s when coffee becomes my BFF (Best Friend Forever!).

Recently Di Bella Coffee sent me some coffee and asked if I would like to share a warm breakfast recipe that I enjoy on a cold winter morning. So I took this idea and started brain storming a lot of ideas, lets start with – bacon and eggs, porridge, pancakes or then a light bulb lit up WAFFLES! Especially since I’ve only used my waffle machine once oops :P

I only then realised there are actually so many variations of waffles you can make. But for those who know me you know I will never pass the chance of making something green meaning Matcha (Japanese Green Tea). These matcha waffles were quite easy to make and the colour combinations were so pretty, green from the matcha, red from the raspberry and yellow from the honey.

The waffles are best served warm so I think it’s perfect for a cold morning when cereal and milk just wont do ~ And quickly about Di Bella Coffee they are used by many cafes Nationally around Australia such as all ‘In A Rush’ cafes or you can purchase online. I like how you are able to choose how fine the coffee beans are grounded for instance, I chose the ‘plunger’ type meaning I don’t need to ground it myself at home.

I am a matchaholic so I like a strong matcha flavour so I might add even more matcha next time I make these waffles, but I was really pleased with the texture soft, sponge and not dry :) Hope you will like them too!

Recipe – Matcha Waffles adapted from Just Simple Eat
Yield – 5-7 waffles depending on Waffle Machine

Ingredients 
2 cups (300g) Plain flour
2 tablespoon (40g) matcha (Japanese Green Tea powder)
2 tablespoon (40g) caster sugar
1 tablespoon baking power
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cup (430ml) milk
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 table (60ml) Vegetable oil
Handful raspberries and honey to serve

Notes
– I used about 3 tablespoons of matcha because I like it strong, but it’s completely up to you :)
– I prefer to use full cream milk because I think it gives the waffles a more buttery flavour
– Feel free to use an electric waffle machine or one over the stove
– Refrigerating the mixture will make the mixture thicker and keep its shape when you cook it.

Method
1) Sift plain flour, matcha, baking power, sugar and salt into a large mixing bowl, ensure everything is combined well.
2) In another bowl whisk the wet ingredients – milk, eggs, vanilla extract and vegetable oil.
3) Poor wet mixture into mixing bowl with the dry ingredients and whisk vicariously until it’s smooth with no lumps.
4) Cover and refrigerate for 10mins or even longer night. Whisk mixture again before cooking waffle.
5) Heat electric waffle machine and follow instructions from waffle manufacturer.
6) Serve warm with fresh raspberries and honey.
